🧱 Just back from the second #DiKopA workshop in Darmstadt and feeling energized (and slightly overwhelmed) by all the conversations around digital archaeology. From reproducibility to RMarkdown, hackathons to heritage policy—it’s clear we’re rethinking not just our tools, but our teaching, too.

💬 I wrote up some thoughts, reflections, and highlights here: 🔗 itsmoreofacomment.com/2025/05/

Just returned from #CAA2025 in Athens and finally had time to reflect on a packed week of digital archaeology, great discussions, and even better Greek coffee ☕🇬🇷

Curious about the conference, archaeogaming, or what’s next for the CAA? I wrote a short recap here: itsmoreofacomment.com/2025/05/

Germans are so proud of their beer, but where do I get a chilled glass like this as I do get here in Greece. Genius! 😁

ICYMI: 🏺In the Yeha Visualisation Project, we created not just a reconstruction of a building or city, but an entire paleoenvironment! The Ethio-Sabaean settlement in Ethiopia from the 1st millennium BCE is located in a lush valley and features a beautiful palace called Be'al Gibri, as well as a large temple.

#500CharAbstracts: Heike Delitz and Felix Levenson discuss the social significance of great architecture and the sociology of #monumentality. They compare nomadic architecture with medieval cathedrals and the cultic topography of Uruk.

This article is part of a wider book on monumentality in ancient civilisations, published by Transcript in 2019: Size Matters.

ICYMI: In 2007/2008 an exhibition took place that provided an insight into one of the oldest known literary texts - the epic of #Gilgamesh, the mythical king of ancient Uruk.

Together with students from the Free University of Berlin, we developed the concept and planned the exhibition. To illustrate scenes from the epic, the young artist Franziska Leischker produced a series of prints exclusively for the exhibition and catalogue.

ICYMI: I was in Paris for a few days and, to my surprise, I didn't like what I had come for, but I did find something else that I would come back for in a heartbeat. Was it Le Marais, Montmartre or the Louvre? Read the answer here:

Excited to share our new open-access paper in it – Information Technology!

Sophie C. Schmidt and I explore Digital and Computational Archaeology in Germany—what it is, how it’s taught, career paths, and future challenges. We call for continued investment in DCA to help integrate digital tools into broader archaeological practice. 🎉🎉🎉

I’m excited to share that I’ve started a new job in Berlin as a project coordinator for KIŠIB, a groundbreaking project focused on creating a digital database of ancient Mesopotamian seals. This 16-year project, run by the Bavarian and Berlin-Brandenburg Academies, combines digital archaeology with cutting-edge tools like LOD, ML (also FAIR). I'll oversee the database, websites, and analysis tools. It's a huge adventure ahead, combining archaeology and technology! 🌍📜

ICYMI: 🏺 Tepe Gawra, Kurdish for "the great mound", is located in #Iraq. The site offers an almost continuous sequence of occupation from the 5th to the 2nd millennium BCE. The "Round House" itself dates from around 4000 BCE.

Our architectural reconstruction is based on analysis, the excavation reports and related literature. As the reconstruction is, of course, only tentative, we have decided to use colour coding to indicate the degree of certainty in the model.

🔗 artefacts-berlin.de/portfolio-

The picture shows three different levels of a reconstruction of the "Round House" at Tepe Gawra. Green is relatively certain, yellow is a good guess and red is completely fictional. © artefacts-berlin.de

@daniel yes, you can make your own characters, but that takes a lot of time. We therefore use what the game offers. Have fun playing the games!
