Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP): come to our stellar panel at 10.30 today in the Maritime Room. Entitled: "A Stress Test for the EU’s Digital Rule Book: Ensuring AI Governance is Grounded in Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights", it includes our own Maria Luisa Stasi and Corinne Cath, PhD, Maria Donde, Head of International at the Irish media regulator Coimisiún na Meán, Dr Seda Gürses Delft University of Technology and Kai Zenner Head of Office and Digital Advisor to Axel Voss MEP.
When Trump sanctioned the ICC, Microsoft cut off services to the court. Now imagine our government, hospitals, and power grid running on Microsoft Cloud. Digital self-determination isn't abstract—it's about whether our society functions when geopolitics shifts. #CloudRisks #DigitalResilience
I wrote a shorter piece looking at the twin dangers of framing cloud questions through the lenses of competition and sovereignty here — based on the report
Worried about our reliance on the #cloud? Yeah me too, but not because of #privacy or #surveillance:
My report for the critical infra lab about the deeper harms of cloudification of internet governance is out!

This is the first new program the team has launched since I joined in January, and I could not be prouder and more excited about working with them on these key issues! 🛰️🚀
Building on years of advocacy in technical forums, we're bringing human rights expertise to ITU, IEEE and industry governance bodies, where our digital are decided.
The physical foundations of our internet shouldn't be controlled by the (cloud) behemoths of big tech. #DigitalRights
📢 NEW INITIATIVE: As tech giants claim ownership of subsea cables and satellite networks, who will protect our digital rights? @article19.bsky.social team digital launches "Wired and Orbited" to ensure internet infrastructure remains open and resilient for all.
Wow, the German government spends 197.7 million euro on Microsoft licenses. Think how many open source developers you can pay with that much money. https://www.heise.de/news/Bund-Lizenzkosten-fuer-Microsoft-auf-hohem-Niveau-insgesamt-neuer-Rekord-9744319.html
I wish this article came out before I wrote this blog post: https://tarakiyee.com/lets-talk-about-open-source-in-munich-and-everywhere-else/
Starting our Data Is Dead event with @C__CS @sjoera and me at the UvA — you can tune in at https://hva-uva.cloud.panopto.eu/Panopto/Pages/Embed.aspx?id=e96d1337-168c-449a-9d44-b11700b8f5eb!
@C__CS and I wrote some words on Dutch .NL registry @SIDN's plan to move its platform to a Canadian venture running on an American cloud. They say this is necessary because no one in Europe can provide the technology that can run a domain registry. This does not appear to be true however: https://www.techpolicy.press/the-dangers-of-moving-key-internet-governance-functions-to-amazons-cloud-the-case-of-the-netherlands/
"To be good with technology requires actually doing technology" - it is so sad that we have to point this out today. You can't outsource all the things you do and assume you'll continue to be in control of what you do. (from https://www.techpolicy.press/the-dangers-of-moving-key-internet-governance-functions-to-amazons-cloud-the-case-of-the-netherlands/)

This is not a drill.
The nightmare scenario for personal privacy in a world where women are stripped of their reproductive rights is coming to pass:
Meta, Google, other tech companies are providing police with evidence to help prosecute women who seek or perform abortions
