you should cancel Duolingo, not out of solidarity or whatever, but because they have replaced their **linguists and writers** with AI. I was a linguist. machine translation is very good, but it makes **ridiculous** mistakes, and as a language learner, you will not be able to spot them. this is 🚩🚩🚩🚩 bloodinthemachine.com/p/the-ai

The Human Genome Project cost taxpayers $3 Billion.

Within one decade of completion, it had already generated a staggering return on investment of $1 Trillion, with benefits in medicine, agriculture, energy, the environment, & more.

If you want to boost the economy, funding science is one of the best things you could do.

#NoMowMay was created in the UK, and American lawns and bees aren’t the same.

So if you’re an American and really want to help, it’s better to add native plants and flower beds to your garden.

The EU is introducing an energy label for phones, together with mandatory requirements for phones sold in the EU;

- 5 years of software updates (AFTER they stop selling the device in the EU)

- providing important hardware parts (during sale and for 7 years after), including free software (if needed), to every repair shop, within 5-10 business days

- batteries have to make 800 charging cycles and still be above 80% original capacity

And on top of that, phones and tablets need this energy label (which also includes a fall damage durability and repairability score), and abide by the above requirements, from 20 June 2025.

(energy-efficient-products.ec.e)

An EU energy label, showing the trademark A to G energy score, but underneath that, shows a bunch of other scores and figures, such as battery charge in hours and minutes, fall damage reliability, repairability, battery endurance in cycles, and dust plus water resistance (with the IP marking)

There’s no AI in ‘team’.

But there is in ‘failure’.

I will at this time repeat my analogy that AI vendors have convinced a whole bunch of executives / managers that cardboard toilets are ready for prime time, and now or soon — perhaps after a few rounds of hype-driven plumber layoffs — there’s not only extra work for plumbers, but also extra work for people who can repair damage to ceilings and floors.

Google will stop supporting early Nest thermostats on October 25.

This is a perfect example of why tech infrastructure should be 'open-first'. Google, for it's own reasons, is making all those thermostats obsolete, when, if they followed and fostered open standards, these perfectly usable pieces of equipment could continue running. Now, of course, everyone will have to spend more money and we'll generate some more e-waste.

Complete madness.

Well, @pluralistic has used a lot better words than I have to talk about why I think I've had such a hard time getting a job over the last year and a half. This is what I've been trying to say all this time!

What I get from reading this is that I'm too expensive due to my experience, I'm old enough to know better and not put up with all the shit that the tech industry has thrown at its workers lately, there's now a butt-ton of people out there just like me, and I'm unprotected because I never unionized.

Yep, I'm one of those that got caught with his pants around his ankles and now I'm really struggling to find a new place to finish out my career. I think this article can be summed up by a quote from P.J. O'Rourke: "Everybody wants to save the Earth but nobody wants to help Mom do the dishes." We were so busy "changing the world" that we didn't see the dishes piling up and overflowing the sink.

I have to admit, I was one of those people. I am so boned.

@bsletten Well that's a bit ironic, isn't it... "dubnovy blazen" is absolutely not april fools in (my native) Czech. It's an overly literal translation of the English term and doesn't exist in my language where we say simply "apríl" (archaic word for the month of April) or "aprílový žert/žertík" (April joke, again a bit archaic). So a mathematician, while trying for a gotcha with a BS generator, produced BS that ignores cultural context... but is now out there, polluting our information space.

@_elena agree with this. So hard to get friends to move though. People are so conditioned to the big tech solutions and dopamine hits.
