#OTD in 1944, Italian priest Giuseppe Beotti was killed by German forces. Beotti was killed for sheltering Jews and aiding partisans during #WW2. His courage and sacrifice in the face of tyranny remain a powerful testament to the strength of human compassion and resistance.

OTD in 1945 (still during WW2), #Italy changed the law, granting Italian women the right to vote (except registered prostitutes working outside authorized establishments 🤷🏻‍♂️). They would vote for the first time on June 2, 1946.

#OTD in 1948, 54 Italian civilians were massacred in Mogadishu and 55 were wounded. The British authorities did nothing to stop the massacre. 14 Somali died, amongst them Hawo Tako, whilst protecting an Italian. However her image has being used as a symbol of tge independence.

#OTD in 1950, Modena: the police, armed with MGs, rifles and armoured cars opened fire against workers protesting against mass firings from a foundry for political reasons. 6 men died that day (3 of them ex-partisans), one of them lynched and shot in the head. 200 were wounded. #ColdWar

#OTD in 1896 , Italian doctor Scipione Riva Rocci, who studied medicine in Turin, published a paper describing his new invention, the sphygmomanometer. Since then his invention has been measuring the blood pressure of humans and animals all over the world.

@streetwriter the picture of the wounded soldier is from the Smithsonian web. I would like to see how the British authorities and in particular, the RAMC recorded everything. It will be interesting to see of there are studies about long term consequences for the civilian population

#OTD in 1943, 88 JU88 attacked Bari's harbour destroying dozens of vessels, amongst them the SS John Harvey with a cargo of 2,000 mustard gas bombs. 628 soldiers suffered gas-related injuries and 83 died. It was covered-up until 1959 when the US Army declassified the documents.

#OTD in 1944, 18-year-old Antonio Danieli was killed by the X-MAS men. He had been tortured with red-hot irons and had his eyes carved out with bayonets. He was posthumously awarded the Gold Medal of Military Valour.

#OTD in 1943, Aldo di Loreto, Medical Captain was executed by the Germans. Aldo was on leave when the Armistice was declared and immediately founded a partisan band. Before being shot he ordered the squad to aim for his heart. #WarInItaly @histodons

#OTD in 1944, Forli, "The City of the Duce" was liberated by the partisans and Allies. 9th of November was as well the anniversary of the foundation of the Fascist Party... I bet it stung.
The Germans left Forli causing as much destruction as they could. #WarInItaly

*Evil Merodach = Amel-Marduk, third king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire.

#WarHorseWednesday: This is Albino, an Italian horse who served with the Reg. «Savoia Cavalleria» He miraculously survived the Battle of Izbushensky despite being wounded and losing his horseman. Sold to a farmer, he was later reunited with the Regiment's former commander. Albino passed away on October 21, 1960. @histodons

#OTD in 1944 an Allied bomb hit a school in Gorla (Milan) killing 184 kids, 19 teachers and 5 workers. This tragedy was profusely used by the Fascist propaganda until the end of the war. #WarInItaly #WW2 @histodons
