#WritersCoffeeClub Nov. 27: Do you prefer writing serialized, sequential, or standalone works? Why?

It's completely about the stories and characters. I love serials, but the current market wants different serialized stories than I'm interested in writing, and doesnt' pay enough.

I enjoy writing series, because I like to deepen the characters and have them grow over time.

Standalones are also fun, because I invite the reader itno the world of these characters for a finate time & we all move on

#WritersCoffeeClub 21: What are some preconceptions about writers you'd like to see challenged?

1. That they have to suffer for their art.
2. That only talent matters, that practice & study are irrelevant.
3. That they can't shut up about their work.
4. That they don't have other pursuits and experiences.

preconceptions about writers to challenge

Really, in the end, I don’t care what non-writers believe writers do or don’t do to produce a book. I don’t lose sleep at night worrying about how a shopkeeper goes about their day.

I would, though, like people, all people, especially the ignorant, indifferent masses in the US to understand the threats to all the arts & what they stand to lose, how their humanity is at stake.

#WritersCoffeeClub Nov. 21: What are some preconceptions about writers you'd like to see challenged?

That it's easy and therefore "not real work."

That we don't "deserve" to be paid for our profession, just like any other profession.

That writers who earn a living at this must be hacks unless they write literary fiction and make lists.

That "no one" makes a living at this & anyone who writes full time must have a trust fund or live off a partner. It's hard, but it's possible.

#WritersCoffeeClub Nov. 20: How did you find your writerly voice?

By writing and writing and writing and writing and . ..you get the idea. I started to both hear and to feel in my gut what worked in a way that was uniquely mine.

I don't find voice static. I feel it grows and strengthens the more you write what is uniquely you.

The more secure I am in my own voice, the harder it is to mimic formula voice in ghostwriting.

@EmpyClaw
It's happened way too often in the past months, and not for emergencies. The city just can't be bothered. No one argues that things need fixing, but letting us know so we could plan would alleviate 90% of the problems.
