The fact that meta is doing this now and not a decade ago when Facebook integrated activityPub means zuck is scared, yes it was ready to connect to the fediverse and probably they use it internally like they use other p2p protocols, twitter also had it like 6 years ago...
Just like the apparently desperate decision of going forward with the metaverse had a secondary goal (waste investor money before an inevitable stock downfall) Threads has the propose of appropriate and/or destroy this place

The whole point to get AWAY from it not join them, it's not a problem simply related to freedom of speech/reach, what Mastodon and other similar projects are doing is greater than that, what the #fediverse and open source based tech are doing is taking the means of production, literally
