2 lecturer positions in applied math open in our institute, one in statistics & probability and another in optimization. Link (in French, with contacts) here math.u-bordeaux.fr/imb/l-imb-r The recruiting team is open to applications to ecology and environmental sciences more generally (climate, energy).

@AndrejPaleobio Perhaps some info here royalsocietypublishing.org/doi combining the raptor diet data with body sizes?

Does anybody know any articles exploring prey (mass) size vs. raptor (predatory bird) body size (mass) allometry? [with presented equations] I mean, across all predatory taxa, or at least covering the whole size range (excluding scavengers).

#Introduction time!

My name is Cian Kelly, I am an #ecologist and conservationist from Ireland living and working as a wildlife biologist in British Columbia. My research in Ireland focused on #biodiversity on agricultural land, followed by forest ecology and #wildfire since moving to BC.

I am founder and Head of Scientific Development at Bullfinch Earth, a BC based benefit company developing cutting edge nature tech for biodiversity and wildfire monitoring.

Don’t hesitate to reach out!

On my way to @sfe2_2024 in Lyon for the week. Looking forward to meet up with colleagues and friends.

I will chair the #TheoreticalEcology and #Modelling session on Tuesday morning (Auditorium) and will talk on Wednesday morning in the same session, about parameter #Identifiability in #IntegratedPopulationModels.

Also don't miss out the Symposium Advances in Statistical Ecology on Wednesday!

Send me a message if we don't cross paths and would like to chat.

Updates from my research group: we're welcoming three postdocs in 2024 statntheorecol.github.io/posts

André L Luza statntheorecol.github.io/membe works since last spring on occupancy modelling for heterogeneous butterfly data.

In September, two new group members joined in: Christie le Coeur (Marie Curie fellow) on demographic modelling of environmental variability statntheorecol.github.io/membe and Julien Gibaud statntheorecol.github.io/membe on state-space models identifiability.

Finally, "Bayesian spatiotemporal modelling of wildfire occurrences and sizes for projections under climate change" by Juliette Legrand, François Pimont, Jean-Luc Dupuy, and Thomas Opitz is available with R code at doi.org/10.57750/4y84-4t68

In this study, the authors calibrate a marked spatiotemporal point process on 14 years of past observation data in the Aquitaine region in the south-west of France. They show that using Bayesian hierarchical modeling allows them to account for the high stochasticity involved in both wildfire activity and climate-change predictions.

A figure showing 5 plots. The two plots on the top show a map of the considered region and compare the number of fires observed (left plot) with the number of fires predicted by the model (right plot) in each zone of a mesh overlaying the map. Visually, the maps match pretty well. The three bottom plots show the correspondance between observed and predicted number of fires greater than 0.1 ha, on three different scales: yearly between 2006 and 2020, daily for the year 2010, and weekly for the same year. The predictions come with 95% confidence intervals and the observations are mostly within those intervals, with the exception of two dots on the daily plot.

Some updates from the Journal of Statistical Ecology #JSE, a #diamondopenaccess journal at the interface between ecology and statistics. The project is still moving forward, has an editorial board--we met this week with members present at #ISEC2024--and has also been recently approved by the editing platform @Centre_Mersenne. We are hoping to be open for submissions in the coming year. More news to come in 2024- 2025!

Currently also working on:
- #IPM #identifiability
- multispecies time series models
- #occupancy models for heterogeneous data.
(don't hesitate to chat me up about these!)
