To the fair folk of the Fedi.

However you choose to deal with the festivities, or don't, or can't, I wish you at least some joy and peace. We are on our way out of the dark and since long before memory or record, humans, it seems, have deemed this worthy of celebrating, at least in some way. But, this may be no more than remembering who you are and realising that the world around us, for all its horror and fear, is still a place of beauty and grace. That there is still kindness and joy and magnificence and the simplest things can show us the most.

So be yourself, enjoy, or not, yourself in the ways that you want to. Let go of shouldn't and what if and all the should be's that plague us. This is not just a time for others, it is your time too. A time to embrace the moment and what we can and we what we have, no matter how little that may seem to be, all the small things and all the great, the stars and the moon (even though we don't have the paperwork for those, and yes, that was a Pratchett reference.) the wind in our hair and everything in between. A time to dream, a time to shine.

Have a good one and wishing you all the best.

Today I binge watched the Advent of Compiler Optimisations by @mattgodbolt which I wholeheartedly recommend, even just because you'll hardly find a nicer person being passionate about code optimisation taking so much time and energy to explain it to people.

(being an assembly dork I mostly could see through his setting up, but I still restrained myself and let him get to the punchline before feeling happy about it)

It’s Christmas Eve, and time to post my favourite photo., one that still fills me with awe whenever I see it.
It was taken by William Anders on Dec. 24, 1968, on the Apollo 8 mission and is the first photo ever taken of the earth with the moon in the foreground. It’s a reminder that we only have one world and its people are all we have. Take care of both.
Regardless of your beliefs, may the holiday season bring you peace.

To spell this out clearly, the reason RAM has quadrupled in price is that a huge quantity of RAM that hasn't been produced yet has been bought with money that doesn't exist to populate GPUs that also haven't been produced to go in datacenters that haven't been built powered by infrastructure that may never exist to meet a demand that doesn't exist at all to make profit margins that mathematically can't exist while economists talk about this thing they call the "rational markets hypothesis".

Today I spent an hour with someone who was very apologetic about being ‘not good with technology’. I love working with people who don’t feel they know enough about technology and showing that there are people who like technology who don’t judge them, who will help them too. I think it’s unacceptable that we make folks feel any differently about this.

Our Ross Donald took a look at Eurostar’s public AI chatbot and found four security issues, including guardrail bypass, prompt injection, weak conversation binding, and HTML injection.

The chatbot UI suggested strong controls, but server side enforcement was incomplete. By modifying chat history and IDs, it was possible to influence model behaviour and extract internal details.

This research shows that familiar web and API security failures still apply, even when an LLM sits in the middle.

Karoline Leavitt’s White House briefings aren’t just spin – they reflect what George Orwell warned about: lies divorced from reality, and the use of “doublethink” to have a word (like “transparency”) mean just the opposite. A historian who studies Orwell explains:

Here at RC2014 Towers we like to celebrate the Winter Solstice with a traditional visit to Silicon Henge. Made from Zilog Z80 CPUs, 74HCT04 logic and an incredibly rare Pi Zero in the middle.

@virbonus @EricAlper For the record I’m not quite that old - but I am exactly this old.

A recreation of British school classroom with a long row of BBC B microcomputers with large boxy cathode ray tube monitors on a long desk running along the wall. The wall is painted a bright blue (unheard of in the 1980s!), and there are brightly coloured plastic chairs in front of the computers.
