i hope i never end up infamous enough that they're parsing my social media on the evening news. My latest 3d printable design is this little device I made to tidy up a power strip that was overloaded with too many wall warts.

Continuing my tradition of creating seasonal costumes for the increasingly out-of-season giant snowman model: a 4th of July hat.

I'm pretty proud of this one; I think it looks great.

@iamkale @3dprinting This one is in PETG, and it's been holding up great. But in the past, even PLA does ok if you hand wash.

Going thru my backlog of 3d models and posting them. This one is a large sponge tray. There are a lot of sponge tray designs out there, but none of them were quite right for us--they were too small or too hard to clean. So here's my version.

I just finished this "faceless" clock kit. I really like it... A lot of people wouldn't give this clock a second glance, but the ones who do have more and more questions. Figuring out how it works is a little moment of joy.

A wooden clock built from a kit. There is no "face" and you can put your hand thru the clock. The hands appear suspended in mid air.

@ittavern Tripped and fell down three steps, broke my fall by hitting my face on the corner of a table.

@xabean no damage to brain, eye, or teeth. Phew!

@xabean Thanks! Got off pretty lucky. Fell from a three step landing, broke my fall with my face onto a table corner.

On the plus side I now have a CT scan of my skull that I WILL be 3d printing.

@3dprinting They look as good as I'd hoped!

There was probably an easier way to get a good looking "wiggle" effect on my easter egg design, but sometimes it's fun to overengineer things.

@dangillmor @molly0xfff From the article: "The immutable ledger of the blockchain, with its traceable addresses and transaction history, could help solve the platform’s difficulties with fraud and trust". Lol.

I got a notification that my Slashdot password was compromised in a leak. So I logged in to change it. My last post there was 13 years ago!

@kbob @3dprinting Good idea. I definitely will, and if I find anything interesting, I'll post again.

Printer down!

Last night, in the middle of a print, my Prusa MK3S+ extruder motor stopped dead. No motion at all. When I tried to move the motor from the menus, it didn't work, and weirdly the firmware actually rebooted once or twice.

Today, I disassembled the printer (not very methodically, sadly) and found that the motor was unable to turn with manual force. This is even when it is attached to absolutely nothing.

I applied an unreasonable amount of torque and the motor spindle "popped" free and started turning again, in the normal hurky-jurky stepper motor way.

The motor is nominally working again (I attached it to the Y-axis driver and confirmed that it works as expected), but since there was no visible sign of a jam or any way to know when
the problem will happen again, I'm just gonna go ahead and replace it with a brand new one.

If your extruder stops working, common problems seem to be loose connections or worn wires first, and a bad driver on the main board second. I haven't seen anybody mentioning a physically frozen motor, so I thought I'd just put it out there so the next person know they're not alone.

I know only one of these is "The Orange Site", but right now I have a window that is solely populated with tabs open to Hacker News, Home Depot, and Printables, and I'll bet I'm not the only one.
