Palisade Research tested a number of AI models by asking them to solve a few math problems but at some point the next task would shutdown the system.
While Gemini 2.5 Pro complied with the instruction, OpenAI’s o3 rebelled and edited the shutdown file to say "Shutdown skipped" instead.
If you have to ask a computer nicely to turn itself off and it can refuse, it would be extremely dumb to use it in a critical system. We will anyway, won’t we? 😬
