Imaging Comet C/2025 A6 Lemmon tonight with my Dwarf II. Getting low on the evening horizon but already have some decent results. Will have to re-stack the images on my PC to center on the comet since it moves so much across the background stars even over 10-20 mins.

So apparently the #KesslerSyndrome has already started. The amount of avoidance maneuvers grew 3x over the last 6 months, and the amount of junk in the orbit went up by <s>40%<\s>63% <a href=spectrum.ieee.org/kessler-synd> [1]<\a> over the last 5 years.

What now? It's hard to internalize that it's already here. It will be a quick ride from now. It goes exponential. Hug your GPS, satelite tv, the weather reports, the space photos. It's the end of the space age. We will be telling our grand children how cool it was.

And maybe, if they are lucky, the moon will herd the debris into an orbital ring. It will be magnificent.

What should we be doing to prepare for this? What are your thoughts?

@bradwilson Hmm, good Q. We’ve been up hiking around Paradise (~5400’) in Oct. with no snow yet but don’t know historically when it usually first falls.

First snow of the season atop Tahoma today.

A misty landscape featuring a stream flowing over rocks, surrounded by evergreen trees and autumn-colored foliage. Snow can be seen on the ground, creating a serene, tranquil scene.

@CooperPointRd A few ways. General direction of satellites/space debris is west->east and is generally slow to break up. Most meteors last a couple seconds max on up to 10 or so for Earth-grazers. Space debris is coming in relatively shallow so takes a while to break up.

Caught some debris on 9/22 and it was in the sky nearly a minute. Plus, those often constantly flake of bits as it breaks apart.

@robdaemon I’ve always admired his hustle but, same. Only exception is his role in “Arrested Development”. Perfect use of him, imo.

All the Water on Europa

Illustration Credit & Copyright: Kevin Hand (JPL/Caltech), Jack Cook (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), & Howard Perlman (USGS)

Explanation: How much of Jupiter's moon Europa is made of water? No one is sure, but probably a lot. Based on the Galileo probe data acquired during its exploration of the Jovian system from 1995 to 2003, Europa possesses a deep, global ocean of liquid water beneath a layer of surface ice. The subsurface ocean plus ice layer could descend over 100 kilometers in average depth. Adopting a high-end estimate of 100 kilometers depth, if all the water on Europa were gathered into a ball, it would have a radius of over 800 kilometers. To scale, this intriguing illustration compares that hypothetical ball of all the water on Europa to the size of Europa itself (left) - and similarly to all the water on planet Earth. With a volume possibly greater than Earth's oceans, the global subsurface ocean on Europa is a tantalizing destination to search for extraterrestrial life in our Solar System. NASA's robotic Europa Clipper was launched last year to investigate.

#apod

Earth without water is shown on the right, while Jupiter's moon Europa is shown on the left. Superposed on each object is a blue sphere estimating the amount of water each object contains. The blue spheres are about the same size.

Do you have creative friends on Bsky thinking of moving to the fediverse?

One of the biggest barriers to entry that ends up with people just joining mastodon.social is choosing which community to join.

This is an invite code good for mastodon.art that's good for 100 uses:

We're a community that exists to provide a safe space for marginalised people firstly, and creatives secondary. Our mod team is minority white, and we're queer, neurospicy, and disabled ourselves.

Personally I am disappointed. This was the perfect opportunity to name a beast of a storm #Karen 😂 Instead a subtropical low pressure has been given the name in the northern Atlantic. Not a lot of moisture associated with this system but winds are reaching tropical storm status. #wx

Just amazing: Comet ATLAS formed some 8 billion years ago. It made about 3 dozen circuits around our galaxy. It entered our our solar system & just passed 30 million kilometers from Mars...

...where ESA's ExoMars orbiter captured these images of the interstellar comet!
