I had a look around the garden in the early hours to see if there were any of our amphibious friends to photograph for #frogFriday. Instead, I was thrilled to bump into this fine fellow. Since our neighbours cleared the bushes from their garden, we've seen precious few hedgehogs in the area.

An adult European Hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus, poses for the camera. It is exploring a very dodgy piece of lawn. There had been a lot of rain during the day, and so a variety of worms and slugs to be hunted.

My child's homework tonight included the question "Is lead normally a gas or a metal?"

I, a chemist, am melting from the inside at the misconceptions inherent in that question, which is supposedly helping my kid practice their vocabulary

For non-chemists: Metal is an entirely different classification from solid/liquid/gas. Lead is still a metal even if you vaporize it. It's like asking if apples are usually red or fruit

Bismarck Monarch

A medium-sized pied monarch with a black face and throat. Back and wings black with a large white wing patch. Underside white, tail black. Clearly prefers primary forest; less common in secondary forest. Often found in bamboo thickets. Song is a descending series of weak whistles. Common calls include harsh churring notes.

My daughter had a few boxes of Girl Scout cookies left to sell, so we made up some "dragon-snails". People could adopt-a-snail (for the price of 3x boxes of cookies), and get 3x FREE boxes of cookies! Such a deal!

One (rear) had garnet cabochon eyes, and the other (front) had tigerseye cabochon eyes.

a personal favorite, oyster mushrooms as viewed from below, with sunlight filtering through their bodies as an angelic cream white color, and the gills taking on an almost "cave formation" quality

a ground-grown tiny mushroom, I believe an inky cap, its cap turned upward toward the viewer, more light coming through it near where the cap meets the stem, creating a dramatic light & shadow effect, surrounded by moss & leaves on the forest floor

another cluster of oyster mushrooms this time viewed from the side, under which a bug of some sort has taken refuge from the rain, similar in size & shape to a fly but more brown in color

a lichen-covered end of a log, with a hole in the middle, from the top of which peeks out a golden tan mushroom, just its cap visible, almost seeming to hover over the void

Cornwall Heritage Trust needs to raise £50,000 to acquire this unique prehistoric site.

Believed to be late Neolithic, it is a substantial oval earthwork with an external bank and internal ditch, forming an amphitheatre-like setting for gatherings and ritual activities.

Invasive vegetation and modern development of the nearby A30 infrastructure and service network, within metres of the site, pose potential risks.
