Pete

Long time gamer and student of history. I enjoy many different games. I lean towards the "series" games like ASL, BCS, OCS, GCACW, etc. because I get the most play for time invested learning. I very much appreciate the content creators that make it easy to stay involved even when life gets in the way. This Mastodon server is my effort to give something back.

@hongkongwargamer Exactly, and the more specific you get the worse the responses. It also fails to explain interactions between the rules. I use ASL as my test case. When I find a model that can deduce VBM freeze I’ll know they’ve taken a step forward in capability.

The podcast feature works ok IMO. It’s a more general representation of the subject and I use it for a general overview and frame of reference before diving into the details.

I spent some time #VibeCoding. Started as a joke, but it quickly became useful. I present to you my #DnD initiative tracker.

@RyTo It’s very different. Image two people explaining the rules in a conversation. Give it a shot.

I’ve experimented with AI as a rules reference a few times. I try it with most new LLM models as they are released. The results have been mediocre at best.

Lately, I’ve been fooling around with NoteBookLM from Google. The results are still mediocre (Gemini models), but a bit better than what I’ve gotten from other models so far. But the interesting part has been its ability to create a podcast based on the materials uploaded to a notebook.

I created a few notebooks and uploaded the rulebooks to games in each. Click a button and it creates a two host podcast that talks about them. I listen in the car to get an overview of news games I’m trying to learn.

It’s weird…

The technology itself is impressive, but it certainly leaves me with the sense that something is missing. It’s like having a sugar-free cookie…yeah, it’s a cookie, but not as satisfying. The missing human element is real and obvious.

That said, for auditory learners, it’s a neat way to get an overview of a topic before diving in.

Trying out a more recent game. Stalingrad Roads by Nuts! Publishing. Currently doing the small learning scenario. My German relief forces are trying to breakthrough to the trapped Stalingrad forces. So far, I have eliminated some Soviet units and closing in with the help of the Surprise Attack (allowing an extra combat for me) and Luftwaffe (2 column shifts) support chits. However, there are more Soviet units to contend with. It's the Soviet's turn next. He can opt to bring in more reserves but at a cost of a more difficult victory condition for the soviet side or use what he has on board.
