Many of you might have already seen the ultra cute "sea sheep" (Costasiella kuroshimae), but yesterday I learned 2 mind-blowing facts about the family of sea slugs they belong to:

1. They incorporate chloroplasts (the organelles in plant cells that do the actual photosynthesis) of plants they eat, into their own bodies to do photosynthesis directly for them (that is the green colour you see), in order to survive if food is scarce.

Imagine being able to live from light!

#Comet Lemmon and the Milky Way

Comet Lemmon, near its peak, is captured with two other wonders: the Himalayas' Meili Mountains and the Milky Way's central plane. The comet displays a white dust tail and a blue ion tail. While Lemmon fades away, the mountains erode slowly, but the #galaxy endures, creating new cosmic spectacles.

I’m so delighted I happened to be in Baltimore at the right time to see Paws on Parchment at the Walters. thewalters.org/exhibitions/paw

Pawprints on a European medieval manuscriptMarginal illumination of a cat playing a cymbalIslamic manuscript with an illustration of a catIntroductory text
PAWS ON PARCHMENT
Centuries before cat memes took over the internet, the antics
of fanciful felines were already delighting medieval readers in
the margins of their manuscripts. The Walters' stellar book
collection preserves a number of charming illuminated cats
that have become world-famous thanks to digitization efforts.
Many other quirky kitties have been stealthily hiding on the
bookshelves and are making their gallery debut here, as is our
collection's rare example of a book "marred" by adorable inky
paw prints. This exhibition brings these works together for the
first time as a way to explore how medieval people thought
about, engaged with, and celebrated cats. From beloved pets,
to important hunters who protected food and people from
disease-carrying rodents, to fur-brained chaos machines
scampering across scribes' desks, cats left an enduring, and
endearing, legacy in the history of medieval manuscripts.

In 1970, 55 years ago today, the Oregon Department of Transportation blew up a whale carcass that had washed up on the beach in Florence. Or at least they tried to blow it up.

They managed to scatter stinking rotting whale flesh quite some distance. Resulting in terror or hilarity depending on where you were standing.

The local TV news coverage is the stuff of legends.

Can you believe that we are only a few weeks away from the holiday season? This year again I will be a vendor at several Christmas / holiday markets in Courtenay and Campbell River.

Starting this Saturday, November 15, from 10 am to 4 pm, I'll be at the Campbell River Museum for their annual gift tour. Come and get a signed copy of my book Wild Vancouver Island or a print!

Screenshot from the Instagram account of the Campbell River Museum promoting my participation to their Gift Tour on Saturday. There is a collage with photos of my prints, my book and myself and a nice comment about my work.

Hey, it's ! To celebrate, here's an American mink (Neovison vison). I often see them on the shore where they forage for fish and crustaceans.
