@krishnadraws I enjoy Captain’s Quarters II BBS. It has a focus on vintage Macs, but not exclusively. Great people, very well run, nice features.

I bought a 486 pc. My first since 1994~
Any recommendations for videos/articles into owning a 486 machine?
I have very little idea of how these old pcs work anymore. I remember there being many intricacies.
As for the pc itself, It’s similar to my very first pc.
I was too young to remember the exact model, but it was definitely a desktop form factor and had a 5,25“ disk drive like this one. 😄

I stopped by https://infinitemac.org for the first time in awhile, and I continue to be blown away by its features and finesse. It’s zero effort emulation with an unlimited software library.
Truly a technical work of art.
@particlesbbs Impressive work!
That’s a great way to memorialize the fun stuff you’ve worked on. It provides inspiration to others, and helps you remember what you spent all that time doing.
As is the way, after a scroll through eBay, the proper drive has been ordered.
Well, @BigBadBiologist pointed out that the bezel looks like it fits a caddy drive. I hoped that I could remove the front fascia from the tray and it would magically fit, but no such luck.
I do have a caddy-based external AppleCD 150, but I’ll have to decide if I want to sacrifice it for the Quadra 650.
I’m thrilled to have an official Apple CD mounting kit for my Quadra 650. We’ll see if it partners nicely with this SCSI Panasonic x2 CD-ROM.
Some say #retrocomputing is a form of escapism...
Considering it's a generally upbeat and authentic community (or scene) in an otherwise money-driven and superficial technology world, I'd say that's a compliment, isn't it?
It's nice that there are still corners in computing where you can hear someone say they're excited by something and take it at face value.
Also, that there are still corners in computing free from corporations. Because, well... they're all defunct.
Difficult upgrade to Kubuntu 25.04. Started with a troublesome mirror site causing the install to fail. Once the install process was repaired, got a black screen on my 2012 MBP. Ends up being a kernel conflict with Apple’s EFI implementation. Installing a different kernel version got it running. 😓
I think I’ve taken care of business and added audio to my RGB to HDMI.
#PicoGUS is now an ODE! I've just released firmware v3.0.0, which adds Panasonic CD-ROM drive emulation. Put some ISOs or BIN/CUE files on a USB stick, plug it into your PicoGUS, and you've got a virtual CD-ROM drive that works in DOS and Windows 9x and supports CD audio. after 35 years, wing commander finally gets a speed patch (frame limiter) for DOS 👏👏👏

I have finally acquired the monitor that accompanied my first computer, an Osborne One (making up for the Osborne’s ridiculously small built-in screen).
It arrived in decent condition, except for the H-Width potentiometer adjustment, which was snapped off inside the case.

Okay I'm going to make one of these aluminum shims to try out this desoldering technique. Seems pretty rad!

Excited to have this new-old-stock 9-inch CRT in pristine condition!
Never been used with serial number 100835 from March 1982.
Watching a pro play early electronic music through an AM transistor radio on a PDP-8.
I was able to resolve the BIOS checksum error by installing a battery.
It will boot from XTIDE if the HD CMOS settings are blank, if present, it will try to use the on board controller. Floppies work with an ISA controller, but oddly it goes into a boot loop when I try booting from the floppy.
Though it may look peaceful now, a great battle was fought here today removing this corroded PS/2 connector.
The long-suffering Wang EXEC 386 (3131) is working with an XTIDE and Sergey Kiselev’s floppy BIOS, but the onboard floppy and IDE are still a mess.
The system BIOS reports a checksum error, so that could be an issue, but the only copy of the BIOS I can find online is the one I uploaded.
