Going to try and post here instead of on Twitter, which has become the worst of humanity.

2023-02-02

@malarkey when was this a thing?

2023-01-09

@marcink it was also began by someone whose radical views mean they’ll never be taken seriously by those who actually can make stuff happen.

And who purposefully shares FUD about the very industry he made the money to be able to do this from.

He’s like an ex oil exec warning about climate change by demanding we shut down all industry.

2023-01-09

@marcink the question is, do you currently have the right to privacy when you’re walking around public spaces? In most cases, the answer to that is no.

There’s nothing stopping me - beyond perhaps courtesy - taking a photo of you walking down a road and then uploading that photo anywhere.

These systems operate within that reality.

The same as all camera-based systems - security or otherwise.

2023-01-09

@marcink a blog post outlining the three stages of Sentry Mode: tesla.com/blog/sentry-mode-gua

An image of sentry mode telling you it’s enabled. hevcars.com.ua/wp-content/uplo

A photo of a landscape Tesla infotainment display showing Sentry Mode activated and recording.
2023-01-09

@marcink the recordings are stored on the car. And are only stored when an issue has been determined by the car, and with a big message displayed on the car’s infotainment screen.

The recordings are not stored on Tesla’s servers, and remote viewing is done by a direct connection to the car.

Misinformation on these technologies hurts your cause, it doesn’t help.

2023-01-09

@marcink @aral it’s not just cars that have cameras on them, so the luxury part is redundant.

There are everyday people who wear bodycams for their own safety and protection - pedestrians and cyclists. How does their safety feature in the equation?

Most people are good actors, but how do we address the fact that there are bad actors out there?

2023-01-09

@6x6pix @guerda @marcink that’s a problem with a specific implementation of technology, not with the entirety of ā€œsmartā€, as you then said.

We can have these devices and still have privacy. A loss of privacy isn’t intrinsic, it generally depends on the implementation and the provider.

2023-01-09

@guerda @6x6pix @marcink do we know this is the case? Or is is thought this may be the case?

If this does happen, is this processed on-device to improve future triggering and context, or do we know it’s sent to Amazon for profile building?

As the Alexa department financials show, there’s apparently no value to Amazon in the data they are being sent through people’s consensual use of these devices. The dept lost $10,000,000,000.

2023-01-09

@6x6pix @guerda @marcink those snippets will have come from false triggers - and Alexa seems the absolute worst at that.

The Echo in my parents’ front room often falsely triggers. The HomePod minis in my own room never falsely trigger.

Which shows how the reality of these devices depends on the platform.

We can have these devices and have privacy. It’s not an either/or.

2023-01-09

@marcink @aral how do you create a security system - like Sentry mode or a dash cam - where the perpetrator of a crime can’t opt out of being caught on camera?

2023-01-09

@6x6pix @guerda @marcink I think it’s been proven multiple times that these devices are waiting for wake words and only processing what’s said after the wake word, they’re not sending every word said in their proximity back anywhere.

There’s appropriate concern and then there’s paranoia.

2022-12-14

@simonbs @antons I’m not a developer, but could it be that iOS is ā€œsleepingā€ the Dropbox iOS app and/or its extensions and so they’re no longer available for Runestone to then interact with when needed?

2022-12-13

@malarkey why not do both?
Like the Mormon Church.

2022-12-11

@em0 @bencc I had a very different experience in Barcelona about 9 years ago.
A young lad stole my phone, then gave it back to me when he realised it was an iPhone 5, so was a few years old and there’d be no way he could get into.
Was such a weird experience.

This is hilarious. CMO and Co-Founder of Raspberry Pi thinks the fallout yesterday from their social media cock-up was an orchestrated attack against the company.

No…
It was a badly thought through blog post followed by a social media person completely out of their depth and making terrible decisions in the name of the brand.
Some things are simple.

I did not see "Raspberry Pi co-founder becomes ridiculous conspiracy theorist" coming but here we are.

You did some bad PR, then handled it incredibly badly when everyone called you on it. That's it. Stop trying to blame everyone but yourselves.

@Raspberry_Pi @nuncio @todbot was it delivering RPis to the local constabulary?

2022-12-08

@Raspberry_Pi @javielico no bullying from Javielico. That all seems to be coming from the account with a Raspberry avatar…

2022-12-08

@Raspberry_Pi @ubergeek @TobyRobertsPi translation:

ā€œYes, he used our tech to spy on people. But he also makes lightsabers and laser-cuts pumpkins, which is fun! And he was also a drone operator for the police… But focus on the fun! Look: an automated swear jar! Just hope it does snitch on you!ā€
