Help with MapSwipe projects in Chad!

ℹ️ MSF currently has two priority MapSwipe campaigns in Chad and aims to complete them before the end of June. More projects are in draft, so every swipe counts!

ℹ️ In Chad, MSF provides medical care and assistance to displaced people and local communities, who often face food insecurity. The teams are working to prevent and respond to seasonal peaks of malnutrition and malaria in children, and are also carrying out vaccination campaigns.

Last month, a Day was held in Olomouc. Around 20 mappers came together to support teams in Tawila, Sudan, adding over 15,000 buildings to in just one day.

Now, the whole mapping campaign in Tawila is complete, with more than 100,000 buildings and temporary shelters mapped to support the humanitarian work in the area.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated in this incredible effort! 👏

ℹ️ A new study used based tools to explore how traffic patterns shift during school terms in Nairobi. By modelling the city’s road network, it opens up important questions about how cities plan for mobility. Results highlighted how children’s mobility needs are often overlooked in transport planning. 🚍

❗ In May 2025, Sudan represents the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. This map, created by Magdalen Thot highlights the deepening food insecurity and continued violence against civilians, particularly in the Darfur region.

👉 This map is part of HOT's Open Map for Humanitarian Needs, a volunteer-driven campaign spotlighting vulnerable communities and the fallout of foreign aid cuts.

🌏 Check out a few pictures from a mapathon in South Korea! They managed to add almost 5,000 buildings into in N'Djamena, Chad. 👏

ℹ️ This mapping supports efforts to prepare for seasonal floods that have been affecting the city since 2020 - damaging homes, health facilities, and displacing thousands. The data will help identify which neighborhoods are most at risk and guide future response efforts.

👉 Take a look at what adding 47,301 buildings to in Cité Soleil, Haiti looks like over five months. This @doctorswithoutborders Missing Maps campaign began in November 2024 and was successfully completed by 80 experienced contributors in March 2025. The data will now support teams working to assist local communities who have been struggling to survive amid ongoing street violence.

🌍 The second mapathon in the series launched at the Young Humanitarian Summit 2025 took place last week. Contributors from Switzerland, Austria and Czechia came together to dive deeper into the essentials of the HOT TM and MapSwipe while supporting a high-priority project in Tawila, Sudan.📍

The mapping campaign in the Chaddra and Moussoro districts of Bahr El Gazal, Chad, has been successfully completed!🎉 Thanks to all the Missing Maps volunteers who participated. Nearly 15,000 km² have been mapped, cotaining 1,558 hamlets, 764 villages, and 8 towns/cities.🙌

🌏 Last week, the student organization @best_prague organized a Missing Maps mapathon in Czech Technical University in Prague. Over 20 participants contributed to mapping Bamyan Province, Afghanistan, to support @doctorswithoutborders and their work with local communities.

Together, they added nearly 2,000 buildings to - a great result, especially given the challenging terrain. 👏

🌍 In the last week of March, a national mapathon event was once again organized in Belgium in cooperation with several universities across the country. A total of 185 participants attended 9 mapathons and mapped over 35,000 buildings in Sokoto, Nigeria, supporting @doctorswithoutborders teams in their activities to help the local communities.

Huge thanks to all the organizers and mappers and cheers to these fantastic mapping results! 🥂

❗ Help us map in Myanmar!

ℹ️ On March 28, 2025, a devastating shallow 7.7-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter near Mandalay struck central Myanmar, causing widespread destruction. Large areas, including major cities such as Mandalay, Sagaing, and Naypyidaw, were severely affected. This disaster strikes amid an already dire situation for the people of Myanmar.
Your mapping will enhance humanitarian efforts in the area.

Last week, a third took place in Zurich and shared their insights about the importance of GIS in their operations and the project. 🗺️
Attendees had a chance to participate in a small mapathon and sign up for 3 other planned for next months, designed to help them advance from beginner to experienced mappers. 💻
