@PersonM The U235 to support your life would fit in a small ball in your hand; we've built structures that survived 1000 years, it is not like Yucca Mountain which we expect to fail in 50,000 years and have the uranium dissolve in groundwater and move in the direction of Death Valley -- contrast that to many many tons of carbon individuals are responsible for which overheat the atmosphere and may kill millions in mass casualty events in the next century

@PersonM the real barrier to "new nuclear" is capital costs that are not attractive if everything goes right and $10B-5 year projects that become $30B-12 year projects. if they can't fix that there will not be more waste, meltdowns, etc.

Renewables are great when the sun shines, batteries are promising, but 100% renewables + storage might be an El Dorado like the fast reactor, pyrolysis, "clean coal", etc... though hopefully not

@PersonM the long-lived stuff is mostly transuranium elements which could be consumed in fast reactors, the fission products mostly decay in 1000 years -- though I'll admit those fast reactors are a challenging technology; the US thinks there are occupational safety problems in fuel fabrication, France disagrees
