New instance, new #introduction !

Hi #fediverse ! We’re the European Southern Observatory, and we design, build and operate ground-based telescopes.

One of them is our Extremely Large Telescope, currently under construction in #Chile. It will have a 39 m mirror, and its rotating enclosure will weigh 6100 tonnes, or about 700 mastodons!

We’re looking forward to chatting with all of you about #astronomy

@maxleibman I've been saying it (and never hearing about it in any political debate / party) ever since automated cashiers came, that they ought to be at least taxed (+ social&health insurance) the same as people they displace would be. At least that.

Am I worried that AI will destroy jobs?

No. I'm never worried about any technology destroying jobs. Because jobs aren't sacred things to be preserved. Destroying jobs is progress. (Do we want to bring back the coal-mining jobs we've lost?)

What I worry about is AI, or the people promoting it, destroying LIVES. The problem is the system in which jobs are being destroyed—with what happens to the people who held those jobs.

I could give a fuck if AI does my job. The problem is the douchebags pushing it don't have a plan for how I'll keep my house and pay my family's medical bills if it does.

It's not about the jobs. To build a just and sustainable world we'll need to destroy so many jobs it would make a Silicon Valley executive's head spin. What worries me, and offends me, is that these assholes have no plan for how to absorb and take care of the people they displace. They never do.

I just discovered the amazing Evertop project by @cobble2stone @ericjenott! Evertop is a portable PC that emulates an IBM XT with an 80186 processor and 1MB RAM, running DOS, Minix, and other old 1980s operating systems, including Windows up to version 3.0. Powered by a low-power microcontroller and an e-ink display, it can run for hundreds or even thousands of hours on a single charge, thanks to its built-in solar panel and extreme power-saving measures. It's loaded with built-in peripherals like a keyboard, PS/2 ports, graphics support, audio output, serial ports, USB, Ethernet, WiFi, and LoRA radio. Charging options include a solar panel, DC input, and micro USB. It features a detachable keyboard, optional hibernate, and power shutoff. Storage is via SD card, and it's powered by an Espressif ESP32 microcontroller. Compatibility includes almost all IBM PC/XT compatible DOS software from the 1980s and early 90s. There's also a minimal version, "Evertop Min," which reduces weight and cost by removing some features. I'd love to see a model with a Raspberry Pi Zero for more productivity-focused tasks.
