Andrew

I do information security for work and try to fit that in around Scouts, Archery, Swim-Bike-Run, motorbikes, ham radio, Tech, Sailing, kayaking.. (apparently I have too many hobbies)

@nixCraft i3wm and a Dvorak keyboard layout. No need to lock your workstation (I have confused colleagues when I've sat down at their machine setup in a similar way and been able to type so it's not fool proof)

@hischeekiness @ronanmcd I liked some of the gcn+ content (did the other content go anywhere?) and will miss having the racing on a spare screen while I work.. it is like the bike racing has all just stopped even though Im pretty sure it hasn't ..

What's the lifespan of a "temporary" workaround in IT?

Approximately the same as the universe, according to the ancient IT proverb: "There's nothing as permanent as a temporary solution."

@piers indeed - despite growing up around Welwyn/oaklands this delve into Wikipedia was the first I remember seeing about it.

@FreakyFwoof @u0421793 html doesn't belong in email including links that you can click on.. plain text is the one true way and we should go back to that.

A thought about tomorrow's English* local elections, for those who will be voting. What political commentators rather dismissively call 'no overall control' at district and county level here has seen cooperation between Labour, Lib Dems and Greens which has been noticeably better for local services and democracy than previous Tory rule which can be summed up as 'you'll take what we give you and like it, peasants'.

*I initially said "UK" as I was making a general point. Amended for clarity.

Emergency services increasingly demand people use what3words to report locations whilst the company rapidly nosedivies towards bankruptcy.

They’ve probably got a year left before going bankrupt, less if the skeleton crew can’t keep the ship afloat.

Learn how to use coordinates/grid ref because one day what3words won’t be there when a life depends on it. chaos.social/@jonty/1143585959

Given they have a year to go at best, they'll be trying to raise money again.

DO NOT INVEST IN THE W3W CROWDCUBE. They've done it three times now, and I expect they'll do it again out of desperation. You will lose all of your money.

@BSidesAugusta huh? I like bsides generally but am confused by your mention!

I do not tire of enjoying seeing people enthusing about how they've set up their first self-hosted service, or how they've tried a piece of Free software for the first time.

Each is an achievement in its own right, irrespective of how many people have done it before them.

@jima @otfrom @neil @sindarina almost none of the AI scrapers support IPv6 which is a pretty compelling argument to make your website IPv6 only with no proxy layer.

End-to-end encryption is secure because it protects the contents of your communications in transit between the endpoints. If you make one of those endpoints an editor at The Atlantic, no amount of encryption is going to save you from your own stupidity.

Hot take: I don’t agree with BYOD. The risks and liabilities are too high. If work requires a phone, they should provide one. I also don’t think Okta, Duo, or any work MFA should be on a personal device. #Cybersecurity #InfoSec #BYOD #worklifebalance

@PopeASDF @jaap @revk I've taken a server (small tower pc) with a load of disks on the train between an office and DC in the past.. It then lived there for a while as it took ages to copy the data off and I didnt want to..

I have JavaScript disabled in my phone browser. I am pretty sure I've been able to use Google to search for stuff but got a message that I need to enable JavaScript to continue.. did something change recently? WHY would I want JavaScript to get a page of search results back?
