One of my enduring childhood memories is installing #Linux for the first time with a text-based installer — Slackware, I think, but it may have been one of the other weird old distros — and using ping to test if my network was working and... I couldn't figure out how to stop it pinging.

I was around 10 and I was scared I was using too much bandwidth so I rebooted and started over.
