@fetchezlavache Or wait, I guess the left screenshot is showing an Open Graph preview, not a quote toot. But then Phanpy is doing its own quote embedding or something?
@fetchezlavache Very interesting. It doesn't show up that way for me. mastodon.social is v4.6.0-nightly.2025-12-05 so maybe they've changed it?
It looks like quoting via edit is not allowed at all. Perhaps to avoid creating a recursive quote tweet?
Wait, that was pre-edit-function Twitter. Now you can you just edit in a recursive quote?

...I guess not
I think on Twitter any link to another tweet was displayed as a quote tweet.
I recall that someone managed to post a recursive tweet that linked to itself by spraying-and-praying a bunch of tweets that each contained an educated guess about its own ID. Supposedly this tweet caused all sorts of problems on the backend.
Guess what I'm thinking of trying to do now...
A minor annoyance when following hashtags on Mastodon is that there seems to be a significant number of people that automatically dual-post to two different accounts.
This frequently results in two identical posts showing up in my timeline back-to-back.
Indoor rack has reached its final form (probably)
I upgraded the middle shelf to 65W Brim Panel As. The top shelf is already 65W, and the bottom shelf has plants like haworthias that don’t like too much light, so it will stay on 45W.
All of the panels stronger than 65W that I’ve seen have the LED driver stuck to the top of the panel, so I wouldn’t be able to fit them in here like this.
Thus: final form achieved

Tillandsias getting ready to bloom
I wanted to take the pups off of these dickias but the root balls were too tough and I didn’t want to stress them too much when it’s this cold (though I do keep them indoors). I settled for up-potting them and removing some of the dead leaves.

The #Mastodon web interface is really good, but the official #iOS client remains heartbreakingly bad. Like just full of obvious bugs that make it hard to use.
I don't like to complain about something free and made by volunteers, but I do think that the poor state of the iOS client is a big hurdle to adoption.
For my own use, it's SO much easier to post photos to Instagram. The iOS Mastodon client just refuses to upload almost every time.
@fetchezlavache I thought I just saw an announcement go by that they're upgrading you. So maybe you'll get it soon.
But I was wondering: Do you see the quote toots but are unable to create them? Or do you not see them? (Are they just links?)
This appears to be a new capability that wasn't in the initial release of quote-tooting.
And there's something different between a toot link simply being in the body (like in the quoted toot here) vs. pasting in a toot link in the new UI.
In other words toots with toot links are not retroactively upgraded to quote toots.
It looks like you can now quote-toot by pasting a link to a toot, at least on the web interface
@lescoggi I have! And I agree it was pretty good
I've finally reached the point where my kids are introducing me to new media, rather than the reverse
