A couple of weeks ago, based on some positive forum mentions, I got a new Wireless CarPlay adapter (it does Android Auto as well): the 2024 Sunweyer. It's not magic, but at $36 from Amazon, it's much cheaper and so far decidedly better than my previous adapter (CarLinkIt). In my 2017 Subaru Impreza, this has had noticeably faster and more consistent connections once I start the car. Too early to be confident about the reliability, but I hope it holds up, because I'm much happier with it.

In case you're not familiar with the Leeroy Jenkins thing, it's basically something to yell while doing something incredibly reckless and poorly considered.

Something I noticed while ago was that, when faced with a design challenge, engineers will sometimes go down a physics rabbit hole. Thinking about what makes fun animations is foreign and scary. I know, I’ll just use real world physics and that will be correct by definition! Tada, a scary creative problem turns into just another straight forward math problem. There is no *necessary* connection between “real physics” and “good UI” though, and monopolizes dev time (cont.)

My last day of work at the World Trade Center was Sept 10, 2001. I worked late, so I was going to go in late the next day. I never made it in (the planes hit in the morning). I was at 5 WTC, a 9 story building between the towers, all my coworkers evacuated

What I remember most were the missing person posters, especially plastered all over Grand Central Terminal

Now we experience it again with under

Having signed a trade agreement with Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom, Trump thinks he now has a trade agreement with the European Union.

The United Kingdom left the European Union 5 years ago.

ETA: GOOD NEWS!

mastodon.social/@Mastodon/1147

In reading an important discussion of the IP assignment in the new Mastodon.social ToS:

github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

I was GOBSMACKED to discover the new ToS has a "binding arbitration waiver," which takes away your right to sue, no matter how badly the service abuses you.

These are profoundly unethical, terrible clauses. They should never, ever appear in "adhesion contracts" (that is, contracts that you merely click through, rather than negotiating.)

Afghan man gets a VISA to the US after assisting the US army in Afghanistan as an interpreter.

Now, without a warrant, Trump's ICE goons have arrested him and put him in detention to get him deported to meet their deportation quotas.

That is your reward for being an ally of the US.

South Africa has for decades been a medical research powerhouse, yet its stature has been little known to people outside the field. South Africa’s scientists have been responsible for key breakthroughs against major global killers, including heart disease, H.I.V. and respiratory viruses such as Covid-19. They have worked closely with American researchers and have been awarded more research funding from the United States than any other country has received.

But a swift series of executive orders and budget cuts from the Trump administration have, in a matter of months, demolished this research ecosystem.

There are grim ramifications for human health worldwide, and also for pharmaceutical companies, including American giants such as Pfizer, Merck, Abbott and Gilead Sciences, which rely heavily on South Africa’s research complex when they develop and test new drugs, vaccines and treatments.

“South Africa is the beacon,” said Dr. Harold Varmus, a professor at Weil Cornell Medicine who was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine for his work on cancer biology and who was a director of the National Institutes of Health.

"After his stop of Dias Goncalves […] Zwinck messaged in the [drug interdiction] Signal group chat about his interaction” — standard practice even when drugs are not involved.”

Homeland Security is in that group chat and they apparently passed the info on to ICE.

Surveillance is frequently used for purposes beyond what the government promises.

@hollie The original 2.5 hour movie? The 5 hour "uncut” miniseries version? Or the 3.5 hour director's cut?

(AFAICT the uncut version is only available on DVD, which makes me less likely to rewatch it.)

I've posted a Github issue outlining why I'm freaked out at the word "irrevokable" in Mastodon's new TOS IP clause:

New Terms of Service IP clause cannot be terminated or revoked, not even by deleting content

github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

It's sort of long (sorry), but several people seemed confused what my problem was earlier, so maybe extra detail will help. I include an outline of my "nightmare scenario", and contrast other site TOSes.

I *will* delete my account over this, and I am not joking.

@amcvittie This is one reason it can take me a long time to get something scheduled.

(Another, of course, is the baseline phone call anxiety. Then there's the commit-to-a-schedule anxiety. Plus the how-should-I-prioritize-these anxiety. And also…)
