Quizás el antídoto, que por lo pronto no existirá, sea que los propios estadounidenses aprendan y exploren que hay otras formas de experiencia colectiva que no son en torno a la idea de una raza/etnia/herencia. Comunidad, ciudad y región, por ejemplo. Ya muchos de ellos las conocen perfectamente, pero no terminan de digerir lo que representan estas formas no-raciales de coexistir y cocrear.

Y es que la misma sociedad también les empuja a que tienen que ser un alguien de una "raza", viviendo con sus semejantes en lo privado, cultivando esa cultura en privado y solo conviviendo con otras para asuntos públicos, para no terminar siendo un "nadie".

En una sociedad que es tan individualista como es de racista, la segregación racial estadounidense se ha convertido de facto en la plataforma de identidad y convivencia colectiva, con todo lo problemático que ello implica.

Yo tengo raíces gallego-portuguesas bien lejanas (vía los Páez) y no ando reivindicándolas a cada rato.

Siento que esa necesidad de otredad que le inculcan a los gringos en su sociedad aún racialmente segregada (solo que ahora *supuestamente* sin racismo de Estado de iure) es la que hace que todos quieran vincularse a la "alemanidad", "italianidad", "latinoamericanidad", etc. de sus abuelos por más que sea ajena a su realidad propia.

@phosphan @Snoro Environmental organizations' role has been divulgation about the direct and indirect effects of the mine on life at its surroundings. Others have focused on how it has given up so many sovereign rights to a private multinational corporation. Others are protesting due to the direct negative impact of the mine on their communities. Lots of stuff.

@phosphan @Snoro AFAIK Scientist Rebellion has supported one of the local environmental orgs, but the majority doesn't identify as environmentalist (the two men killed didn't) nor respond to a single organization. Some groups have taken the lead, for sure, but general sentiment right now is fully against Minera Panamá organically, beyond particular leaderships.

@phosphan @Snoro Indeed, these are general protests againat an open pit copper mine owned by First Quantum Minerals, the way it was signed into law and the government itself which allowed this and other things to happen. This is the bursting out of something that has been building up for decades. It's complex. The most immediate things are the mine and the current administration's poor response to the matter & the crisis that followed suit.

Blockades were already divisive among ourselves, but to resort to violence, much less to murder, isn't as socially acceptable as it seemingly is for all individuals —seemingly right wing all of them— now lauding Mr. Darlington as a hero against the curtailing of liberties and the imposition of so-called "evil global agendas", both ideologically-driven made-up contexts unrelated to the real context of the countrywide demonstrations.

The real context of the protests is an entire country against a multionational mining company, its investors and the corrupt governments —plural— that enabled it. And while indeed the environment is at jeopardy, to reduce this to environment protests is ridiculous; to do so in the name of framing Panamanians and our struggle as "globalist pawns", malicious, if not outright evil.

lmk in the replies if you need any further deets about this. I know international media isn't reporting this (granted, there's more delicate stuff going on right now, but I feel they wouldn't even if it didn't anyway)

I'm not subtle about being on the left wing, even if w/o party affiliation or with an "orthodox" ideology right now. That's one thing. But I'm not interested in identitarian party politics in which we are accusing each other of being evil based on our affiliations alone.

When I denounce far-right views, it's because they're fundamentally misanthropic; not because they're "my competition" or "my rivals". I don't care about popularity or electoralism.

The context is some random guy on Meta's Xitter clone saying the Left had an anti-Semitism issue and me saying that –as my limited but varied knowledge has showed me– it's more of a thing Europeans have had since the Middle Ages and maybe earlier; y'know, a generalized prejudice more than a disputed stance.

Eurocentric anti-racists are still Eurocentric. The solution is quite simple: consider there is more to the world to the east, west and south of Europe. A lot of us have even learned English for international communications so we're not even asking you to learn a new language (?) 😭

Years and years of colonialism and racism are deeply ingrained in this conflict and are to blame.
