@rachel look forward to hearing how it goes!
@rachel the "solution" post in the forum thread seems to suggest you can forward the entire subdomain?
Also it looks like the limitation with DoH servers was fixed a little while back, I just didn't notice: https://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?t=195330#p1083146
@rachel it's barely hinted at in the docs (no surprise) but MikroTik DNS does support forward rules via FWD record. Here's a forum thread on the topic: https://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?t=180798
One gotcha though - FWD records do not work if you use DoH/DoT as upstream DNS.
@rachel Yea my experience with mdns reflection on MikroTik has never been good either. I've always wound up having to run a separate reflector container as well.
I hit a wall inspiration-wise for the last few months to hack on my #homelab. Not entirely sure why that happened, maybe research fatigue from planning for my Japan trip?
Anyway finally got back into it a little bit today as I moved forward on setting up my M4 MacBook Pro. It's been sitting partially configured for months now but spent some time applying my dotfiles config.

@mmeier Just want to make sure you are aware that down sampling does not actually save storage space? It only improves query times.
@rachel FWIW I do have VLAN filtering turned on in the bridge settings for my MikroTik devices.
@mmeier fair enough!
@mmeier Do you want to consider VictoriaMetrics in place of Thanos? Victoria Metrics uses disk for storage and is more efficient with compression than Thanos.
@rachel @willglynn make sure that when considering L3 routing on the 310, you are only using the feature that are marked as HW on this table: https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/spaces/ROS/pages/62390319/L3+Hardware+Offloading. Step out that HW list and you'll find that CPU is simply not good enough and you will be very unhappy.
And yea MikroTik CLI is its own beast for sure. I prefer WinBox but that may just because I really dislike messing with networking.
@RangerRick Ahh got it. Yup 💯 agreed.
@RangerRick I've been travelling thru multiple cities and staying at different hotels (mostly big chains) and let me assure hotel UX is definitely not solved. Every room I've checked into, the first night has involved cursing at designers who put plug points into inaccessible cubbyholes and whack-a-mole with the light switches...
@skinnylatte Er s/car/cat/g ?
So I was setting up a new laptop recently and took the opportunity to refresh some of my configuration.
Tree Style Tab for Firefox(*) is amazing and one of the best extensions. But I decided to check out some TST addons and came across Auto Tab Discard. And holy crap... why I not been using this till now. On my main PC, with Auto Tab Discard, Firefox with 60+ tabs open is using less than 1Gb of RAM! (**)
(*): Yes, I've seen all the news about how Mozilla are enshittfying things and I should be immediately abandoning Firefox. Honestly, switching to a new Firefox fork is so low on my list of todos I'll not get to it unless Firefox literally stops working.
(**): Yes, yes websites are bloated and we shouldn't even be in the situation where 60+ tabs uses 1Gb. But here we are...
@mike Big fan of the FirefoxPWA extension as well. FWIW assume you've seen this. https://pwasforfirefox.filips.si/help/faq/#how-to-use-an-alternative-browser-as-a-main-browser
@codeyarns could not agree more. Juan and Victor from VASAviation are the two channels I follow for aviation news. Victor for the facts and Juan for the expert opinion.
@codeyarns check out blancorlio on YouTube. A pilot with the most drama free analysis of aviation incidents. He's got a video up on the incident but I haven't seen it yet.
