> On November 28th, 2012, Randall Munroe published an xkcd comic that was a calendar in which the size of each date was proportional to how often each date is referenced by its ordinal name (…) "In months other than September, the 11th is mentioned substantially less often than any other date. It's been that way since long before 9/11 and I have no idea why." After digging into the raw data, I believe I have figured out why.

Artist unknown, but some morning whimsy

#StreetArt

The photo depicts a small, black cat peeking out from between paving stones.

The cat is drawn or painted, creating an optical illusion within the pavement.

It features prominent eyes, a small nose, and pink inner ears.

Its paws are visible, suggesting it's holding onto the edge of the "hole".

The surrounding area consists of interlocking grey paving stones.

Kzerplt extruded a querysome appendage.

"Professor, why is my report marked as Fail?"

"Clearly, you have just made things up."

"I did not! I found and studied an uncontacted world, and reported truthly!"

"Absurd! A technological yet irrational society? This 'Earth' you dreamed up is nonsense!"

@Kierkegaanks @ben_hr it all makes sense once you realize that they actually wanted to make the film blue in the face, and smoke is just an ad-hoc improv movie they made on the side.

Even in the rain this place is fucking magnificent.

Looking out over a fjord from high up the mountainside a boat carves a white line through the teal-blue water. It’s cloudy but the sun has found an opening to shine brightly down onto the mountain in the distance, right into a small valley between 2 peaks. The light is also reflected below on the surface of the water where it meets the mountain. There’s rain falling in the far distance on the left side of the picture, obscuring more peaks in a grey mist. No alt text will do Norway justice, but I’m trying.

In the Apollo space program, the FDAI (Flight Director Attitude Indicator) showed the orientation of the spacecraft through a ball that rotates on three axes. The yellow needles and black pointers show error and movement rate. This FDAI was later modified for use in a Space Shuttle simulator.

An indicator with a rotating ball in the middle. The top half of the ball is black and the bottom is white. The ball has various lines and angle markings on it. Three yellow needles project across the ball to indicate the error in each axis. Three scales with needle pointers show the rotation rate in the three axes. The scales are illuminated. Two power wires run to clips attached to the interior of the FDAI, which has its cover removed.

Neutrality is, and always has been, a trap. Journalism is inherently biased: done right, it's a public service that is performed to tell people what they need (not want!) to know. That almost always puts journos at odds with power structures, business interests, and anyone trying to bilk the public.

Journalists do not owe "balance" or neutrality to those they report on, they only owe them truthful and fair reporting. They don't even owe them a right to comment.

What's been lost...
Entomologists from Krefeld, Germany, collected flying insects for two weeks in August 1994 (left) and—at the same site, with an identical trap— in August 2016 (right). Similar data from 63 German protected areas overall gave a shocking result: a 76 percent drop in insect biomass between 1989 and 2016.
It has worsened significantly in the past 9 years.
Photographed at Entomological Society of Krefeld

Two cylindrical 2 liter lab glasses, both containing a light brown fluid with a mass of insects at the bottom. The left glass gas more than 1500 mL of insects, the right glass around 250 mL.
