Thinking, again, about despair: the fear I have for the future of this country, and the deliberate actions that are being taken to keep us all mired in uncertainty. This despair is debilitating when I give it a chance to take root. It doesn’t take a lot.
A colleague shared in a meeting today about hearing Hillary Clinton talk about optimism as a moral choice she makes every day. That phrase stopped me in my tracks, and I’ve been mulling it over since.
Maybe I can come to things from a place of optimism. Not blind, not performative, not unrealistic. But an outlook that’s grounded in things I believe in — the power of joy, the importance of community, the value of history. Beliefs so fundamental that they can give me the space I need for hope.

@sintrenton @matthew_d_green @simplex I ran an XMPP server more that a decade ago. Since been using Google mail chat and meet.
I am thinking of self hosted matrix and jisti to replace it. Did you guys consider it?
@matthew_d_green Let me introduce you to @simplex
I think of digital pollution the same way I think of light pollution.
I acquired a Chrome extension for $5 and began redirecting the browsing traffic of existing users to whatever I wanted.
While doing so, I caught an ownership transfer of an extension with 400,000 installs that folks should be aware of.
@Tarah I love RSAC, because I look forward to the hike with friends in Yosemite, the Weekend after. You are invited and there will be mushrooms. :-)
Fediversians. I just spent three weeks blogging EVERY SINGLE NIGHT to give you a COMPLETE list of instructions to RECLAIM YOUR DATA. Go dark, scatter your traces, stay secure, erase your data footprint. Accessible to all.
Just in time too. Data sovereignty and protection are no longer a luxury but a MUST.
Data traces are political traces. History teaches us that data by you and about you can and will be used against you and those you love.
For you, your neighbors, your families. #optout NOW, and help others to do so too.

Gov Pritzker's (IL) speech today was good.
"After we’ve discriminated against, deported or disparaged all the immigrants and the gay and lesbian and transgender people, the developmentally disabled, the women and the minorities – once we’ve ostracized our neighbors and betrayed our friends – After that, when the problems we started with are still there staring us in the face – what comes next?" he said. "All the atrocities of human history lurk in the answer to that question. And if we don’t want to repeat history – then for God’s sake in this moment we better be strong enough to learn from it."

@Daojoan After reading Sapiens I thought "Nothing Matters". Then after reading Beginning of Infinity, I figured "I know Nothing"
Our viewpoint is cautious, but not deflationary.
We marvel at what LLMs can do and how amazing they can seem at times—but we also recognize the huge potential for abuse, we chafe at the excessive hype around their capabilities, and we worry about how they will change society.
Some may feel we are lenient by not unequivocally condemning the use of LLMs.
We've given it a huge amount of thought, and we don't want to lecture *at* students about the evils of genAI.
We don't think that works. Students use LLMs already; we want them to discover the problems for themselves.
Each lesson will be supplemented with 5 to 10 minutes of optional video discussion. Video for the first two lessons is already available. We will be posting additional episodes to accompany the rest of the lessons on a rolling basis throughout the next few months.
We also intend to develop further instructional materials and would love suggestions and requests.
Instructors, what would be useful? Exercises? PowerPoint slides? A more extensive instructor guide? Something else?
We want to make it easy for you to use the course in your classroom.
The course is very much a work in progress we will be adjusting and adapting and revising in the months to come.
We are eager to hear what you think and will be very grateful for any feedback you might have.
Thank you so much,
Carl Bergstrom and Jevin West
A genuine connection with a human being cannot be shared or divided at will like an infinite, renewable resource.
Relationships don't work that way. Never have, never will.
