DINK was an industrial rock band from Kent, Ohio whose song “Green Mind” brought them some brief success around 1993-1995.

I remember listening to “Green Mind” on 107.9 WENZ “The End” in northeast Ohio. The intro sample of the asshole car dealer talking about how America is great and then telling someone to go to hell is a classic.

I saw them perform live in 1997 or 1998, not long before they broke up. That’s also when I acquired my copy of the “Blame It On Tito” EP with this cover of “Ohio”.

Current music: DINK’s industrial rock cover of Neil Young’s song “Ohio”, because it’s the 55th anniversary of the Kent State shootings.

Interesting SMS reply lure, designed to fuel the anxieties of the recipient that they may have skipped out on an important engagement so they reply. The best way to become immune to such tactics is to make skipping meetings part of your MO.

An excellent time was had by all (excluding the microwave).

Anyway, Gang of Four played the majority of the songs from their first two albums (Entertainment and Solid Gold), and at least a couple from Songs of the Free (“I Love a Man in Uniform”, “We Live As We Dream Alone”) and one from Shrinkwrapped (“I Parade Myself”).

They were joined by a horn section for a few songs, including the closer, a reprise of “Damaged Goods”. This was a fitting ending: it was their first single and it ends with “I’m kissing you goodbye (goodbye, goodbye, goodbye)”.

Longtime Gang of Four bassist Dave Allen died about a month ago. (Apparently he wasn’t technically their **original** bassist, in a Pete Best vs Ringo sort of way.) Hugo Burnham said a few words about him at the end of the show.

I highly recommend jwz’s blog post about Dave Allen and his musical work after Gang of Four: jwz.org/b/ykl2

RIP Dave Allen
He was the bass player of two of my favorite bands of all time, Gang of Four and Shriekback.
I met him once, about a decade ago. He endured my embarrassing fanboying with grace.
"According to Burnham, Allen passed away at home with his family after enduring the early-
onset of mixed dementia for some years."
Guitarist Andy Gill died of COVID in 2020, so now they are Gang of Two.
There is not a lot of decent video of Allen's era of the band, but watch these. And if you are
not already well familiar with their albums Entertainment! and Sold Gold, rectify that.

Gang of Four’s original guitarist, Andy Gill, died in 2020, apparently from COVID-19. I’m glad I got to see him play live back in 2015.

His guitar playing style is a peculiar mixture of staccato strumming and droning feedback. I don’t think Andy Gill can ever be replaced, but Ted Leo did a good job mimicking Andy’s guitar parts and seemed to be having a great time.

(These two photos are from SXSW 2015, not yesterday.)

Last night, I went to see Gang of Four’s farewell tour, and they did not disappoint.

This final iteration of the band consists of original singer Jon King and original drummer Hugo Burnham, joined by bassist Gail Greenwood (of Belly and L7) and guitarist Ted Leo (of Ted Leo and the Pharmacists).

A blue and purple tinged photo of Jon King singing, flanked by Gail Greenwood on bass and Ted Leo on guitar. The whole band, with drummer Hugo Burnham now visible. Behind them, various flags including UK,US, pride, and a woman’s right to choose.

Not trivial with the error correction and redundency in QR codes. This is a working QR code after all.

@SnoopJ There’s a GameCube version, so in theory someone could make a mod to enable the authentic Minority Report experience: interacting with a computer by waving your hands (Wiimote) in the air.

I agree with Joe Bob that this is an awfully convenient time to reveal that the ex-husband has psychic ability, right before the big flashback that wouldn’t work otherwise.

It would be cool if they did the distorted Polaroid by taking a photo on SX-70 film and manipulating it by smushing the emulsion around, like the Peter Gabriel 3 album cover. I’m not sure if that film was still around in 1997.

I hope Joe Bob explains how anyone thought it was a good idea to release Ringu and Spiral in theaters on the same day (or to release Spiral at all, really).

@onelson I like the original Japanese version of Pulse, but not as much as Cure from the same director. I haven’t seen the original Thai version of Shutter but the yeah the American remake was bad.
