Microsoft marketing: “Your data stays in Europe.”

Microsoft’s Legal Director (under oath, in French Parliament): “No, I cannot guarantee that.”

Still think Microsoft Teams is a sovereign solution?

New, at KrebsOnSecurity.com: Marko Elez, a 25-year-old employee at Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has been granted access to sensitive databases at the U.S. Social Security Administration, the Treasury and Justice departments, and the Department of Homeland Security. So it should fill all Americans with a deep sense of confidence to learn that Mr. Elez over the weekend inadvertently published a private key that allowed anyone to interact directly with more than four dozen large language models (LLMs) developed by Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI.

WeTransfer just changed their ToS to allow them to train AI on any files you transfer through them.

Don't use there service, especially for work that you don't have the right to relicense to them (e.g., commercial work that's exactly the most likely to create the huge files WeTransfer specializes in).

(ETA: this is already going boom so I'm muting it.)

Europe appears to just have given up on doing anything technical. Perhaps we should hurry up & stop pretending we want to do anything ourselves, so we can speed up getting to our eventual destiny of a full time holiday destination for American, Chinese and Russian tourists. And mind you, that is the _best_ outcome I can see right now. therecord.media/spain-awards-c

"I deleted my second brain" by Joan Westenberg is very worth reading. I am on a similar path right now, removing a lot of digital cruft and structures I had applied to my life in the belief that I could gain more control.

Long rumored, eagerly anticipated by some, "The Book of PF, 4th edition" nostarch.com/book-of-pf-4th-ed is now available for PREORDER. The most up to date guide to the OpenBSD and FreeBSD networking toolset (again for the CEST-ish crowd)

ICYMI: A minimum tax on billionaires mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2025/
The super rich pay a much lower % of their income in tax than almost everyone else. The 'Zucman tax' prevents that in a way that nearly everyone should agree is fair, so why not do this rather than cutting welfare?

Today in the New York Times I argue that Trump’s manoeuvres to shut down parts of the International Criminal Court in The Hague through Microsoft is the first of more accidents waiting to happen between US Tech and Europe. So we must act and become more sovereign. nytimes.com/2025/06/20/technol

France quietly deployed 100,000+ Linux machines in their police force - GendBuntu is a silent EU tech success story

reddit.com/r/BuyFromEU/comment

Well done. Let us get free from Microsoft spyware OS. They are not trustworthy vendors, and all taxpayers' money should go to fund open-source apps/software and not to Bill Gates' fortune.

From Reddit post:

France quietly deployed 100,000+ Linux machines in their police force - GendBuntu is a silent EU tech success story

I wanted to spotlight a quietly massive success story in European digital sovereignty: GendBuntu — France’s custom Ubuntu distribution used by the National Gendarmerie.

The GendBuntu project derives from Microsoft's decision to end the development of Windows XP Back in 2005, France’s Gendarmerie began switching from Microsoft products to open-source software — starting with OpenOffice. Fast forward to 2024, and GendBuntu(Linux) is now running on 97% of their workstations (over 103,000 computers!).

France has shown what’s possible when a government actually backs open-source, in-house, and EU-grown solutions.

More countries should follow suit.
