Watching #blackpanther for #juneteenth 🙅🏾♀️
@austinmermaid.bsky.social fight for this country? Baby, I don’t even fight sleep….
@justsoup when your powers (colors) combine… I am…. A world that recognizes how much stronger we are together, without the constructs of man made ideology.
Growing up in North Texas in the 70’s and 80’s, I managed to go through elementary, junior high and high school without ever hearing once about Juneteenth. Never came up in history class, the local newspaper, in my Scout troop or around our dinner table. Even during my time at a state university in Texas I don’t remember ever coming across the term. (It probably didn’t help that it fell on a date when everyone was out of school on summer vacation.) I first recall becoming aware of Juneteenth sometime in my mid-20’s; I remember thinking “this is probably just some new, made-up holiday that Black people invented, so I’ll just ignore it”.
Fast forward a couple of decades, and the light began to dawn. It’s no wonder that I did not know about Juneteenth. It celebrates the day when emancipation from slavery was proclaimed in my home state of Texas. The day that owning other humans as property was putatively outlawed. A day that the middle-class, pro-slavery, racist, white supremacist culture in which I was nurtured and trained up desperately wanted to suppress.
I am thankful now that I know the story behind Juneteenth and heartily embrace it in solidarity with all who celebrate the dignity and rights and worth of every human being. I am angry that I was deliberately and systematically kept from knowing about Juneteenth by those who were supposed to teach me these things as a youth, and I am disheartened that there are those, even now, who are trying to do the same for yet another generation of children who will grow up to embrace the middle-class, pro-slavery, racist and white supremacist culture in which they find themselves through no choice or fault of their own.
@tx_tartan #ageofaquarius a mind free from the lies.
“Woke”
#juneteenth is a celebration for all people.
It is the day of liberation for Black people in America (freeish), it is you accepting the truth of who enslaved and oppressed African people and their descendants, and is the liberation of your mind free from the lies and the indoctrination of white supremacy.
