Companies like Asda pay people the minimum wage. These people then qualify for UC, paid for by all of us. Asda then pays out dividends to its shareholders.

They are literally taking the piss, and our money is being used to pay dividends.

No company should pay any dividends whilst any of its employees wages are being supplemented by UC. If you can’t pay your employees a wage that enables them to live without subsidies from the state, you should not be paying dividends to shareholders.

Today is Carl Sagan's 90th birthday.

In light of recent events, I find myself ever so grateful for that time when we were both alive on the same planet, when we all had his insights and wisdom as guides for evaluating both the natural world and the world created by humans. And so thankful for his mentorship.

I was blessed back then and didn't fully appreciate my good fortune. I certainly do today.

Thanks, Derick! But a small correction.

The CICLOPS website was NEVER a NASA site. It was a site of my design that we at CICLOPS built in our free time, w/ no funding from NASA or JPL. And the company that hosted it did so for free, as a gift to us, since they loved the site and what we on the imaging team were doing, and they wanted to support us.

When that outfit closed shop is when I put out the call for help. And thanks to you & others, CICLOPS now lives!

@fraser Just listening to ep #730 of astronomy cast, and funding disappearing for NASA missions' websites is something I ran into. When that happened for @carolynporco's https://ciclops.org site that hosted images from the Cassini mission. But, the site lives on after a bunch of folks, including me, made a static site of it. We've tried to keep all the URLs to prevent link rot, and managed to keep search working. It's now hosted on a shoe string budget by private space enthusiasts.

I'm happy to report my Halloween "Evening w/ Richard Dawkins" gig in Glasgow, Scotland, performed to a packed house, was a real joy. All ~1900 attendees were receptive, engaging, & laughed at our jokes. What more you can ask? 👏

I am tired of hearing “I can’t believe it’s this close.” It’s this close because something MV like 1/3 of Americans are fascists. And another 15%, +/- a few %, are OK to go along if they think they’ll get something out of it. Top that off with billionaires dumping $ into supporting that side and controlling the media. Also tired of the trope that’s what’s needed is to “stop dividing us.” We need to be divided from the fascists and it needs to become unacceptable to be a fascist. #politics

@quantensalat I have no direct knowledge of what the field of physics was/is like, and so no means of comparison.

The cowbell thing was, as I saw it, also a class thing: We are the valuable ones, and you are the the ones who serve us. Therefore, we will summon you with a bell, and you will be expected to come clear the table and serve the next course quietly and efficiently.
