@brightonwildlife Are there any starter packs for Sussex/Brighton wildlife folk?
A mediocre man with obligatory beard.
Doing digital since β85.
For the last two decades I have worked with non-profits focused on biodiversity, the natural environment, and education, with a bit of hospitality and tourism thrown in, too.
Twelve of those years were at an environmental record centre helping make biodiversity data more useful and accessible for everyone.
Also worked as a graphic designer and builder of web sites.
Fuller bio on website, if interested.

Tab Stash is my new favourite browser extension. Spectacularly useful if, like me, you're a tab hoarder.
Would I be out of order if I were to sayβ¦
π£οΈ Including a link to a Youtube video on a post in The Fediverse is like posting an image without alt text. β
Why?
Because #Youtube (#Google) now forces viewers to be logged in if they want to view videos. This means people who donβt/wonβt have a Google account canβt see the content linked and have no idea what it is.
Absolutely top-notch, sage advice on using images from @ia. Read this, remember it, bookmark it, refer back often.
The #CityNatureChallenge starts tomorrow. That's four days of observing, FridayβMonday, followed by a week to upload and identify everything.
Four days, 12 hours a day, is 2,880 minutes. The craziest observers can make double that number of observations, and still find time to eat and sleep.
How do we do it? I've made a journal post with some tips on how to efficiently make lots of iNat observations.
I've delayed long enough -- let's talk about the City Nature Challenge!
It's a global citizen science competition between cities, vying to observe the most species in one weekend. Observations are made via the #iNaturalist app or website.
It starts this weekend, April 26-29, 2024. You have until May 5th to upload all of your observations and try to get them identified.
If your city or region is participating, that's pretty much all you have to do!
It's City Nature Challenge this weekend (26 β 29 April, 2024), an epic, global mission to record as much wildlife as possible.

@belldotbz @SudoCat I've got another account on mastodon.social I use (a LOT) for different stuff to this account I have on indieweb.social. I've not personally noticed any cesspittyness or defederation or anything negative about it at all (aside from the odd idiot, but, hey, it's social media, whaddya expect? π)
I keep telling people put off by the "complexity" of Mastodon: joining isn't complicated - just sign up for mastodon.social. Move if you really want to once you've got into it. Simple.
Bit unusual for Microsoft of all companies. Did someone mention them on Slashdot or something?
I just had a really refreshing call with the great @mallory, and she helped me see the Threads/fediverse question in a helpful way:
The question shouldn't be
[ Threads vs. No Threads ]
The question should be
[ Just Threads vs. *Everyone* in the fediverse ]
If more companies/organizations/etc. were coming in and bringing their users and committing to the network, the question of Threads becomes less important. Threads will have less relative power.
@belldotbz how will you know if something you publish has been written or assisted by AI?
(assuming you're publishing things written by people other than yourself, ofc)
The blogging platform #Ghost is working on adding #ActivityPub integration. That means, among other things, being able to follow Ghost-powered blogs and comment on articles right from your Mastodon account. The website they made to explain their plans is really nice! This is what momentum looks like.

Grateful thanks to @404mediaco for building this VERY COOL thing.
Why does Rishi Sunak deliver all his speeches like he's reading a children's book on CBeebies? I keep expecting him to sign off with, "Go to sleep, Upsy Daisy. Go to sleep, Tombliboos. Off to Rwanda, naughty immigrants."
Excited to share that Ghost is going to federate over ActivityPub and become part of the largest open publishing network in the world π
