This two-part Mongabay mini-series examines the current status of the climate emergency; how world leaders, scientists and the global community are responding; and what may lie ahead as the world warms beyond the crucial 1.5° Celsius (2.7° Fahrenheit) limit established in the Paris Agreement 10 years ago.

A horrifying read.

"We’re talking about nearly half the tree of life disappearing in one human lifetime. That is absolutely catastrophic."

South Africa’s native reptiles and amphibians, including threatened species, are being illegally captured and exported for the global pet trade.

A recent study found that eight of the 10 most-exported reptiles from South Africa are native species, most of which are not protected by CITES, the global wildlife trade convention.

Lightning strikes the Earth about 3,000,000 times a day, so you'd think we'd have the science of lightning all figured out. In fact, it's an active area of research. The more scientists learn about how lightning strikes form inside storm clouds, the more mysterious this natural phenomenon gets sciencefocus.com/planet-earth/

For the first time since they were hunted to (local) extinction in the 16th Century, beavers are roaming wild in England again.

Following a policy announcement by Defra and Natural England in February, the National Trust has legally released the first two pairs of Eurasian beavers to live in the wild in Dorset.

@TCatInReality I couldn't agree more! The article does mention that new laws have been created to allow the government to ban the payment of bonuses and criminally charge water companies that break the law, so that's definitely progress in the right direction. The £11m fund was set up by the previous government and right now it's all we have I guess.

Good news: Millions of pounds of fines paid by water firms for the pollution they caused will be used to fund environmental schemes to protect and restore the country’s waterways, rather than being diverted to the Treasury.

Bad news: The £11m in the fund is just a rounding error compared to the billions of pounds in dividends paid out to shareholders by polluting firms.

The right to peaceful protest is a core part of democracy, and by jailing environmental protestors the government is violating this right. Five climate activists now face a combined 21 years behind bars simply for planning a peaceful protest on a zoom call.

Please sign this petition to urge the UK government to revoke two recent bills that criminalise peaceful protest: action.greenpeace.org.uk/prote
