A 1900 Glasgow style tenement on the corner of London Road and Springfield Road in the East End of Glasgow. I've just learned that this type of building, which has a corner angle of greater than 90 degrees, is called a Splayed Building. This makes it the opposite of the Gushet Buildings I tend to feature way too frequently!

But this brings us to the unbearable conclusion that we are entrusting all our data and business processes to the new King of America… because we can’t be bothered to get used to a different word processor, or make an effort to support other software.

Looking out across a misty Loch Lomond from Rowerdennan yesterday afternoon. This is another of the wonderful locations you can reach within an hour of Glasgow, unless you're walking the West Highland Way. If you are, it'll probably take you a couple of days or so to get here. The view's well worth the effort, though.

@aj

Even the first question is a challenge, as I was born on an Island nation, but my birth was registered in another, and I then lived in several more.

If I ignore the four or five countries I might say I'm 'from', I'd have a fair stab at another three to five that have close ties (if I was given names and asked to place them).

My knowledge of the African countries is very poor. I 'd struggle to correctly place even half the countries, let alone states/provinces within them.

Here in the U.K. and we're just over a week after the local elections which saw far right Reform party win a large number of seats.

1 has resigned.
2 have left Reform and are serving as independents.
18 are being investigated for posting far right hate tweets.

And you just know we're only weeks away from the leadership challenge by Andrea Jenkins.

"Conservatives *hate* complexity"

a superb post by @pluralistic that distills a core aspect of why right-wing ideas about how to manage things like the economy, immigration and our personal lives collide so rapidly with reality

key passage here, but do read the whole thing

pluralistic.net/2025/04/24/her

Screenshot reading:

Conservatives hate complexity. That's why the Trump administration banned all research grants for proposals that contained the word "systemic" (as a person with so-far-local cancer, I sure worry about what happens when and if my lymphoma become systemic). I once described the conservative yearning for "simpler times," as a desire to be a child again. After all, the thing that made your childhood "simpler" wasn't that the world was less complicated – it's that your parents managed that complexity and shielded you from it. There's always been partner abuse, divorce, gender minorities, mental illness, disability, racial discrimination, geopolitical crises, refugees, and class struggle. The only people who don't have to deal with this stuff are (lucky) children.

Complexity is an unavoidable attribute of all complicated processes. Evolution is complicated, so it produces complexity. It's convenient to think about a simplified model of genes in which individual genes produce specific traits, but it turns out genes all influence each other, are influenced in turn by epigenetics, and that developmental factors play a critical role in our outcomes. From eye-color to gender, evolution produces spectra, not binaries. It's ineluctably (and rather gloriously) complicated.

The conservative project to insist that things can be neatly categorized – animal or plant, man or woman, planet or comet – tries to take graceful bimodal ...
