It's not trans people, immigrants, scientists, student activists who are causing our economic woes....

Cartoon of smiling blond guy kicking an oligarch,, who is wearing a top hat and bushy mustache, as he runs away with a bag of money. Reads: immigrants didn't raise your energy bills. The rich are getting richer and you are the one paying for it, whilst the government sets us against each other.

SpaceX Starship, 9 launches, 0% success rate.

Seems to me that Nazi rocket engineers are not what they used to be...

If demanding an industry respects human rights and respects the laws would kill this industry, this industry should have never been created to begin with.

It's okay to let unruly human-rights-destroying industries die.

Innovation at all cost is no innovation at all.

Seems fair.

Chart of the change in household income from the Republican bill. The lowest two quintiles lose money. The middle and fourth quintiles gain a little. And the top 0.1% will gain more than $380,000 of after-transfer income.

So…about AI’s energy use…

“…to create a five-second video, a newer AI model uses ‘about 3.4 million joules, more than 700 times the energy required to generate a high-quality image’. That's the equivalent of running a microwave for over an hour.”

Further evidence that we no longer live in anything resembling a democracy. The US is dead. I don’t know what to call this new “thing”. Trumpistan I suppose. med-mastodon.com/@cbarbermd/11

I have been a casual birder since last year, every now and then busting out Merlin Bird ID on my phone to add a new bird I would randomly hear or see. But in the last several days I have really stepped up my birding game! I discovered #eBird and now I'm really hooked. Seeing my stats is fun, and the data I collect is actually beneficial for science.

I’m a big Neal Stephenson fan. He posted his remarks on AI from a recent conference. You should read the whole thing, but this was particularly concerning. It aligns with what I hear from the students I speak to. nealstephenson.substack.com/p/

"Yet, rather than invest in ways to help people leave their cars at home, America’s typical response to congestion has been to build more lanes and highways. In a nation where cars are king, it’s no surprise that more freeways are often portrayed as the only way."

LLMs exist to crush labour. That's not even my surmise, the people paying billions of dollars to fund this stuff are extremely open and explicit that this is their goal.

There are no ethical use cases for LLMs at this point in time. Maybe when the bubble has popped thoroughly. Not before.

EDIT: I should have expected this post would attract the deliberately obtuse shills, but my goodness

Musk touted $2T, brought down to $1T, and quit - saying he could only find $150B. Nothing actually audited, now reporting only $13B. Meanwhile thousands of hard-working, critical government employees lost jobs. And oversight orgs of Musk and Trump activities are closed. A study just came out showing the majority of Americans can’t afford a minimal quality of life/basic cost of living.

The majority.

The richest country in the world is failing to provide for most of its citizens while the billionaires get richer.

Remember this the next time they talk about making America healthy again.

People need universal health care and basic income. Access to clean air and water. An end to food deserts and inequality.
