I’ve noticed lots of dry leaves lately, which has been worrying. After a bit of detective work, I realized the pot was getting direct, intense sun between 6:00–7:30 a.m.—the Dutch summer sun gets up early! 🌞

I’ve moved them to a shadier spot. Let’s see if Gurkie bounces back.

Any cucumber farmers out there with beginner tips? Drop them in the replies—Gurkie needs you! 🌿🙏

🌱 The Cucumber Chronicles – Day 23: A New Home 🌱

Some of the sprouts didn’t make it, but four are hanging in there—two of them going strong. 💪🥒

Since they needed more space, we upgraded to a bigger pot and moved them in.

🌱 The Cucumber Chronicles - Day 5: Random Facts Edition 🌱

Nothing much to report today. The plant drank its water, got its sunlight, and
generally looked... good? 🥒☀️💧

So instead, here are 3 random things I learned from the cucumber's Wikipedia
page:

1. Originates in Asia 🇮🇳🇳🇵🇧🇭🇨🇳🇹🇭
2. It's made up of 95% water 💧
3. Columbus brought them to Haiti in 1494 🚢

And yes, it poured—the moment no one was home to bring the plant to safety.

When we returned, it was soaked. Drenched.

I really hope it's going to be okay. It looks so fragile. 🥺🌱

🌱 The Cucumber Chronicles - Day 4: A Sudden Shower 🌱

Everything pointed to a sunny day today. So I brought our little cucumber plant
outside to soak up some sun and fresh air.

How naive of me. After so many years in the Netherlands, you'd think I'd know
better. Every day can be a rainy day here. ☁️🌧️

Meanwhile, Felix and I have entered the name brainstorming phase. One strong contender: Gurkie—inspired by "augurk" (Dutch for pickle). 🥒

Felix says he needs to sleep on it (it was my idea, and he doesn't want to be influenced). Naming a plant is serious business, after all.

🌱 The Cucumber Chronicles - Day 3: The Calling of the Name 🌱

Nothing dramatic today—our leafy little friend keeps on surviving. The longest
sprout has proudly reached 12.5 cm! 🌿📏

I added an extra stick to support a few sprouts that are deeper in the pot.

From my newfound research, here's why cucumbers love having something to climb:

- Stability: Gives them something to lean on.
- Training: They learn to grow upward rather than sprawling everywhere.
- Health: Reduces risk of rot and diseases from soil contact.

Fingers crossed the little cucumber appreciates my efforts! 🤞🥒

🌱 The Cucumber Chronicles - Day 2: The Support System 🌱

Apparently, growing cucumber plants runs in the family! My grandmother back in
Greece always had cucumber plants, and legends say, one of those plants started
just like this one—from a plastic pot of Greek yoghurt brought home by me as a
kid. (Backstory unlocked! 🎉)

However, I completely forgot that cucumbers are climbing plants! 💡 So, I used
some skewer sticks (aka souvlaki sticks) to create a quick support system.

BTW, I don't even know if this is actually a cucumber plant. 😅

🌱 The Cucumber Chronicles - Day 1 🌱

Went to pick up my 5-year-old son from school today, expecting the usual
drawings & crafts. Instead, he handed me a pot with a plant and said:

"Dad, this grew from the seeds I planted in class, and now we can grow cucumbers
at home!" 🥒😱

The journey begins: me (and my botanist AI assistant) versus a cucumber plant
(and my son's potential disappointment).

Wish me luck—and any advice from plant experts is more than welcome! 🍀😂

🚨 Just a heads-up:
It's a bit of a pity that my series The Cucumber Chronicles couldn’t be imported into this new account. 😔

I might try rescheduling and reposting them all via @bufferapp so they live here too. 🤔

You can of course read the whole story in Threads (threads.com/search?q=CucumberC) and Bluesky (bsky.app/profile/dinostheo.bsk)

Stay tuned! 🥒📖
