@schtaks I’m using Babbel right now, and joined some discords for learning German. While I’m in there, I almost exclusively use German. If I don’t know how to respond, I have ChatGPT translate, explain the grammar, give alternate ways to say it, and the pronounciation.

So, finally taking the time to learn German. Something I’ve wanted to do for a long time!

@AlidaAntonia Openvibe does that. I only use it for crossposting. I like Ivory for Masto and Graysky for Bluesky more.

🤷 The Mastodon vs. Bluesky discussions give me VI/Vim vs. Emacs vibes, and I haven't given a crap about that either over the last three decades.

Unlike Vim or Emacs, I have to use both Mastodon and Bluesky, and I suspect more of us will have those feelings, too.

I go to where my friends and the community are, which means I spend too much time on Discord, too.

Sadly, social media is life.

@harrymccracken I haven’t checked it in years, unless you count embedded tweets in news articles that you need to go to Twitter to read the whole thing.

I thought I would continue to sneak peeks at Twitter hundreds of times a day. I am checking it occasionally. But it is way, way, way less tempting than I expected.

Moral: Don’t use social networks that make you feel even slightly bad. It’s pointless!

There is a lot of conversation recently about #bluesky (detractors and supporters).

My take: I'm using #socialmedia less and less, I moved from #twitter to #mastodon as soon as #Musk acquired it.

Along the way I lost followers and people I was following. But I met many new interesting people.

Over time, I got used to a light and manageable feed.

I have no desire to jump back into a new social network. I value analog activities more and more and they are more beneficial to my #mentalhealth

@certcompanion no worries! I get ya. I’d like to hear more about what you do though and pricing options. I’m a professor at a university so I’m curious if your services are beneficial for my students.

@UnsettlingEmpire Thanks! I get the reason you’d recommend that. I still think Signal is a completely safe method due to the level of encryption, and in no way am I knocking Matrix. It’s an excellent service also.

Matrix isn’t perfect either though. If you’re in public rooms, many don’t use encryption due to issues with large rooms being encrypted. And you’re at the mercy of whoever hosts your instance in many ways. They can’t see message contents, but they can mess with the server in a lot of ways. I wish I could find that article I read a while back on this.

Both are great options regardless, though.
