Many clinicians enter early sessions with African American families wanting to be respectful and culturally responsive...

...but when they're anxious about getting it wrong, or trying to adhere to colonial frameworks, that anxiety can drive their behavior.

They'll talk more than listen, avoid certain topics, over-explain, or stick rigidly to structure.

Bias doesn’t only show up as prejudice...

...it often shows up as anxiety in the room.

The coldest detail of the show, His & Hers…

…Anna was a freshman in 2003, and the other friend were seniors in 2007…

…meanwhile I was graduating college!!

These two scenes are not only the same, but done for the same reasons, with similar outcomes:

Yea, all of the above tbh! And also, I’m glad to know folks are still finding her! 💯

Many of our most common social insults are actually shorthand for how groups respond to unmet needs, visibility, and difference…

…so here are some reframes for the most popular ones (as I’ve been doing this with folks over the past few days):

Okay, while I love this, I still feel erased and retconned 😅😅 and I acknowledge that I’m all of that too! 😮‍💨😮‍💨

The first Toni Morrison was given to me by my AP English teacher who wanted to challenge me as I was getting through the passages and selected readings…

…and that book was, The Bluest Eye…

Pick Me/Pickmeisha: Someone seeking belonging through self-betrayal and the devaluation of others.

Try Hard: Someone seeking legitimacy through the discrediting of others, rather than through their own grounded effort.

Cringe: Someone whose authenticity hasn’t been accepted and violates unspoken group norms

Doing too much: Someone who’s been erased or rendered invisible and policed for their expression

For my elder millennials born in ‘80 - ‘85:

Are y’all feeling erased and retconned?

I will not explain to anyone not in those years!!!

…taking it home, I devoured it over one weekend as the story of Pecola, her assault, and the way the community erases her until the fatally horrific ending was one of the most affecting books I had read in my short 15 years…

…and to this day, each reread of this book makes me go back over sentences multiple times, forcing me to be a better reader and writer, but there’s something else that this book has done…

…oh, and yeah, this book is sad, tragic, dark, and full of dread…

…but the reward for finishing is an arresting tale of Black girl erasure that can never be told any other way by any other writer!

Thank you, Toni! 🤌🏾💯💖🙏🏾

…it made me feel like Toni was hovering over me, watching me read it, as her writing told my story as a dark-skinned Black girl systemically erased from my own story even as I final girl my way through it…

…and if I’m being honest, the ending still haunts the sh¡t outta me til this day…

…despite the current discourse, Toni Morrison changed my life because she wrote my story before any of you even acknowledged I was there…
