@KevinMarks @nworbmot Dinorwig has a C/P ratio of ~5 (5 hours of continuous generation at full reservoir). For (ULDES) we're looking into C/P ratios of > 100, i.e. orders of magnitude larger storage capacities.
For comparison: 9.1 GWh (capacity of Dinorwig according to Wikipedia) corresponds to ca. 1600-2700 t methanol (higher value from considering M2E efficiency) or approximately an Olympic swimming pool full of methanol.
PHS is great, but not for ULDES, capacities just don't scale well.
@KevinMarks @nworbmot Because hydrogen / methanol can provide the same services to an energy system:
1. Long storage durations, i.e. long durations of discharge (large quantities of energy)
2. long durations before discharge (before use).
Hydropower is only suited 2., the amount of energy (1.) that can be stored with hydropower is low.
+ aspect of scalability & availability:
Methanol (and hydrogen) storage can be built anywhere at any scale. Hydropower requires the right geography.

Maybe. But you will need energy storage if you want to get the last ~10-20% of the electricity mix switched to low carbon energy sources.
And low carbon footprint of the electricity mix benefits all those applications which are electrified.
Is green methanol an overlooked storage option for the electricity grid? @nworbmot and @euronion argue that it has sometimes advantages over hydrogen. Storing H2 is often difficult, methanol is liquid and therefore much easier to store. Uff, EDF estimates methane leakage from pipelines in USA to be 1.25-2.66 Mt/a (69 - 147 PJ/a), saying official U.S. EPA estimates are up to 8 times **too low**.
147 PJ/a are ~1% of EU annual gas consumption.

But EDF announcements on availability have felt (to me) to always to be overoptimistic in the past. Issues certainly seem far from over at ~60% fleet availability currently (in regular years it was usually 70-80%).
