Today, I wrote for 12 hours in what could have been 12 separate blog posts. But instead, it’s one comprehensive post that covers what I think about Apple design right now.

It’s long. And there’s audio.

All of that is completely antithetical to the premise iOS 7 and iOS 26 are built upon.

UI elements constantly hiding themselves unless you use hiding gestures, hover states, and swipe to reveal means I can never rely on items to be where I expect.

I always have to look and check first.

UI "getting out of my way and letting me focus on the content" just means I can never tell what is UI and what is content unless I actually look closely at the app and pay attention.

I love how Liquid Glass advocates for accessibility. Now everyone can experience what it feels like if you can’t read shit. #wwdc25

To me, the main thing Apple needed to fix this WWDC was their relationship with developers, and this keynote suggests they think otherwise.

A new generation is going to learn that putting strong UI elements behind text is a lot harder to get right than you first think.

To reiterate, what I want out of a phone:

- Headphone jack
- Square corners on screen, no rounded edges
- No holes in screen
- Smol like my hands
- Ability to install and distribute my own software
- Ability to turn off anything that bugs me
- Ability, when reading ebooks, to silence visual "noise" like clocks or navbars
- I want to neither monetarily nor in platform political power support a company that sells "AI"-branded features as part of their business activities

Maybe you’ve heard: every font is free! Since fonts aren’t subject to copyright, you can legally ‘pirate’ them if you use a specific loophole!

...except that’s not really true. I’ve seen this claim repeated quite a lot recently, and it’s missing some pretty important nuance.

A thread 🧵

Alphabet and numbers in a monospaced typeface (MD System Mono, to be exact), arranged in a grid. In the bottom row, ‘$0’ (zero dollars) is highlighted in bright red.

Have you seen this new application? It's written in N. It literally uses Cerium. It's on Squernix with Wine. It's literally written with Zark. You can probably install it with Woo. Dude it's built on Birdnest. It's a Garkle exclusive. It's for Borp. You can run it on Borp. You can boot up Borp and run it. Log onto Borp right now. Switch to Borp. Dive into Borp. You can Borp it. It runs on Borp. Borp runs it for you. Borp runs it for you.

I am flatly uninterested in letting an LLM execute arbitrary code as my user account on my laptop and maybe even sudo to root are you people fucking nuts

After the whole "I asked ChatGPT" as talk opener I've recently seen a lot of "Look, my kids are using AI to build their own games and that's beautiful" stuff in presentations.

Makes me sad that instead of wanting kids to learn how to build something they get taught to accept what the kinda-passable code generator craps out. What they learn is not how to conceptualize or build something, what they learn is that shit comes from nowhere if you just match your expectations to the output afterwards.

Perfect example for why there's no way to build good software with venture capital - no matter how great the team and their intentions, the need for exponential growth means the product will eventually either be enshittified or shut down.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the EU should reserve some serious money, fork Mozilla and make regulations that governmental websites need to work on their fork (and Big Tech gatekeeper websites as well).

This is one of the items to stay independent from Google's, Apple's and the US's whims.

(The other item is a mobile OS like @jolla's #SailfishOS.)

the degree to which the internet economy runs on self-promotion and the amount of angst and anxiety self-promotion causes for most people with humility and self-awareness explains a lot about the state we’re in tbh tbqh

I’ve just realized how RADICAL it feels to open a Wikipedia app on my phone and look up a topic without anyone trying to sell me something, steal my data or hit me with random genAI nonsense. What have we done?

oh, you created a ~ directory in this project... That's supposed to be my home directory silly

Thought for 3 seconds

Assistant:
Oh no! 🤦 You're absolutely right! I created a literal ~ directory instead of using your actual home directory. Let me fix this immediately:

Listed 1 items in ~

I think there is some truth to this. Nowadays its mostly about fetching data and pushing views on Screen to format some JSON Data in a vertical list.

Which, frankly, is fine because 99.9% of site designs out there average out heuristically to the same thing.
