Everything You Wanted to Know About Vector Tiles (But Were Afraid to Ask) 🗾✨

openstreetmap.org/user/daniel-

I collected my thoughts on vector maps and vector tiles after having spent some time reading the mvt spec for the first time 🦧💡

Happy year of #OpenStreetMap vector maps! 🎉

Ever needed to simplify street networks? I did. And it is a pain. So we joined forces with @anavybor and @JamesGaboardi and wrote an algorithm that does that for us. And can do for you, as it is available as a Python package called `neatnet`.

Here's a short blog about it - martinfleischmann.net/simplifi

And here's, not so short preprint - arxiv.org/abs/2504.16198

But you probably want the package. That is here - uscuni.org/neatnet.

Happy coding!

The Clearance project will be funded by the NGI0 Commons Fund @NGIZero from the NLnet foundation @nlnet . It aims to improve data quality by acting as a proxy between and data consumers, holding back suspicious changes while continuing to replicate all other valid changes.

Great map by @jurgentje at jurgen.gaeremyn.be/map.html showing that municipalities in Benelux rely on Microsoft or Google for email much more than in France or Germany

More info in Jurgen's blogpost jurgen.gaeremyn.be/2025/03/08/ and his interview on the situation in Brussels bruzz.be/actua/column/data-ana

There will be on-premise MS Outlook behind some - many? most? - of the blue and green, so dependency on Microsoft will be higher than these colors suggest

I also confessed I sometimes get bored of LLMs (this got a bunch of people nodding) — bored because they are so logocentric and middle-of-the-road, a society-scale regression to the mean. This quote from prof Lumumba-Kasongo captures it well:

"[creativity] is so much about
trying out weird things — and AI
is so much about averaging.
It's the people invested in playing
in that space of the anomaly and
playing with the unexpected who will continue to thrive"
