@headius I think this is going to get even more interesting as improvements from project Leyden progressively make their way into the JDK (i.e. the ability to cache jitted code into a CDS archive), so starting to pave the way for that now sounds like a smart move.

@igb reminds me of the ghost train scene from "Spirited away".

A still from the film "Spirited away" by Hayao Miyazaki, where the main character, a young girl named Chihiro, rides an empty train in the company of her friend, a ghost like figure.

Monday morning after the holiday break, at the breakfast table:

My kid: I don't want to go to school...

My wife: I don't want to go to work...

Me: I don't want to go to 2025...

@stuartmarks @igb it is *technically* possible to use an open source distribution of Android for that, but it is far too complicated to be an option for most people i.e. I had to build from source - all 30GB of it! - to install it on an unsupported older phone model to give to my kid.
And the worst part wasn't even building or installing the OS: it was jumping through all the flaming hoops imposed by the phone manufacturer to unlock the bootloader!
And that is a shame and missed opportunity IMO

Today is the day. Welcome to THE charger!

USB-C is officially the common standard for charging electronic devices in the EU.

This means:

🔌The same charger for all new phones, tablets and cameras
⚡ Harmonised fast-charging technology
🔄 Reduced e-waste
🛑 No more “Sorry, I don’t have the right cable”

One charger to rule them all.

A minimalist illustration showing a packaged charger box labeled "one Union one Charger." The box features an image of a blue charger with the European Union flag symbol and a USB-C cable. The scene is set within a holiday theme, with decorative Christmas trees, ornaments, and gift boxes surrounding the charger box. In the top right corner, there is a small EU flag symbol.

@stuartmarks @igb Imagine instead buying a full-fat smartphone for a 10yo that you can trivially flash with a version of the OS with no Internet access or apps. Or flash with a media player-only ROM just for the duration of summer camp.
Then update the software on their 12th birthday for something a bit smarter, etc... All the way until the device is broken or no longer supported, by the time they turn 16 or more.
Sometime I can't help but think about how much better things could have been...

@stuartmarks @igb I'm following this thread since,as the father of a 12yo, I have similar concerns.
And looking at what looks likes a neutered smartphone, it dawned on me that we collectively failed both a as software-producing industry and a software-consuming society: what about the old promise of general purpose hardware where you could change the software on it at will?
Instead we have to buy new H/W for each usage and ditch it when it's outlived its purpose. I find this pretty sad.

@carnage4life Of course the real issue here is that the companies that foolishly invested BILLIONS in this new gold rush will be deemed "too big to fail" when it all comes crashing down and that bailing them out will be the start of something far, far worse..
We've been there before, we know exactly how this will play out...

Frederic Thevenetfthevenet

@carnage4life the thing is, image generation like what DALL-E or Midjourney offer, fundamentally lacks the universal usefulness of something like spellchecking to become as ubiquitous. It might be useful to some, but overall, it just doesn't compare, period.
And at the same time, it costs orders of magnitude more to run, so when the magical VC money runs out, I don't believe users are going to pick up the tab: it's just not worth it.

@robpike the saddest part, I feel, is that extra level of complexity where you explicitly *fight* against increasingly hostile product designs to try and retain a modicum of privacy and control over stuff you *paid for*. A perfect example for that being trying to set up a new phone, PC, TV, etc... without having to sign away your private data.
And this is only for those who are tech literate, privacy conscious, and patient enough to try and deal with it. The others just don't stand a chance.

Back at my parents' house for the holidays, I ran into my old bookshelves...
I think this single, yellowed page could serve as a fairly comprehensive bio: old/french/nerd

The first page from the French edition of Neuromancer by William Gibson.
The page is yellowed, betraying its age.

The schedule for the Free Java devroom on Saturday at #FOSDEM #FOSDEM25 is now out! See fosdem.org/2025/schedule/track

Will you be there (if you haven't been before it's free to attend if you can get to Brussels)?
I'm personally particularly looking forward to "(Almost) everything I knew about java performance was wrong"
Will you be there? #openjdk #java

So... is now available to all "free" accounts! Better yet, it's actually *mandatory*, as you seemingly can't opt-out!

Does this mean you have to be a paying user to get the privilege of disabling it? Is Microsoft's business model for this actually a protection racket?

"Hey, it's a nice code base you got there. It'd be a shame if it got drawn in AI slop by accident..."
