Capture of a tiny Eastern spinebill looking up from feeding on the large upright orange flowers of a Banksia ericifolia. The flower head dwarfs this gregarious little honeyeater.

You haven’t got an umbrella I can share have you?

Friendly male King parrot now letting me get very close to him.

Extreme close-up of a male King parrot, so close you can see the images refracted through the beads of rain on his head & cheek. We’ve had 90mm of rain since yesterday & everything is very damp, especially the birbs.

And, they’re back.

The eastern spinebills made a welcome visit to the garden today. It would have been rude of me not to have the camera ready to record their antics.

Tiny little Eastern spinebill posing nicely on a dead tree. Red eyes, long hummingbird-like beak, black head, white flash under the chin, chestnut brown throat & fuselage with brown/black wings describes this delicate little birbHere the spinebill is snap frozen by a fast shutter speed as it hoovers nectar from a red salvia plant. Its hovering abilities are legendary and this shot captures it wellAgain, the Spinebill is hovering in mid air & this time, it has its beak extended into the Salvia flowering bright red fit it to harvest.

Royal visit!

Pair of Ming parrots dropped in this morning & granted a royal audience. Good birbs.

Close up head shot of a female King parrot. Her delicate featherage is beautifully articulated by the rising sun providing contrast between light & dark.Close up of the male,!ing parrot, with his bright red head & body, black eye surrounded by a yellow ring, deep green wings.

Walsdorf Creek yesterday to see if the reserve’s Powerful Owl was in residence - it was along with a very deceased brush-tailed possum. This is a very efficient large killing machine.

Exiting the reserve a swoosh of air flew over me, a Southern Boobook owl being chased by several territorial birbs. It roosted on a nearby tree close enough for me to get some shots. This is a small efficient killing machine.

Powerful owl, bedecked in brown & white barred feathers sits in its usual feeding roost. At its feet is a dead ringtail possum about to be devoured. Great big yellow irises sets this pic perfectly. Small Southern Boobkbook owl, Australia’s smallest peel, resting on a branch after being chased be several energetic territorial birds. This is a lifer for me always wanted to see one, hear them often at height.

Earlier this morning. Chasing the elusive Southern Bookbook. Apologies for my heavy breathing - confluence of heavy cold & very cold morning.

Take care Thrillseekers.

Powerful owl 4m(13’) up a tree with a very unwell Ringtail possum clutched in its vicelike talons. The owl is light brown or milk chocolate in colour with white barring running across its feathers. A mean killing machine.

Wingmen!

High key photo looking into a very grey sky of a pair of Australian magpies harassing a Wedge-tailed eagle. Who flew into who’s territory here is the question.

Silhouette of a Wedge-tailed eagle wings spread fully with two magpies hovering over one of the eagles wings. The image has not been digitally processed and because of the ambient lighting it has presented in monochrome. It works

What’s in a name?

A lifer for me: a Rose robin extracted from the darkness. A little soft, but happy to get the shot.

Tiny Rose robin, with its grey head, white stripe adornment between its eyes, & breathtaking rose-pink breast. First time seeing this species.

Moore free-2-air TV - Battle over Gembrook.

An adult pair of Wedge-tailed eagles floating overhead & being challenged for aerial dominance first by an Australian magpie then a Brown goshawk.

Eagles: zero fcuks!

Go-you-good-things.

Aerial shot of 2 Wedge-tailed eagles with a lone, brave, Australian magpie literally on the tail of an eagle. Good action shot, if I do say so myself. In the aerial capture, the Australian magpie is formation flying closely above the soaring eagle. Now it’s the turn of another raptor to get in on the battle. A Brown goshawk has been loitering for a week and here is strafing an eagle at speed. Both raptors have wings spread in a magnificent display. Is that all you’ve got… eagle simple floats into the setting sun away from all the hubbub …

Scar tree?

The relief cut from this tree has all the hallmarks of a First Nations’ Scar tree. Aboriginal people removed bark from trees to make canoes, containers and shields and to build temporary shelters. Not sure if its of requisite age (>200y) still, it does make you wonder.

Narrow tree ~600mm with a elliptical scar cut into the trunk. The outer lining of the scar has regrown inwards over time but the smooth sapwood is still clearly visible.
