9/6/1944 CANNED GOODS NOW ALMOST POINT FREE
Washington DC: Rationed processed foods underwent its largest cut when 17 items including canned vegetables, baby foods, soups, and baked beans were ordered point-free. The surprise move was announced from the White House and did not affect rationed meats, butter, cheese and other foods taking red points.

Paris, freed yesterday by its own people, was reported to have been occupied early today by the Second French Armored division and some American units ordered into the city by Lt. Gen. Omar N. Bradley to seal the patriots' victory.

8/15/1944 PATTON GETS PROMOTION TO MAJOR GENERAL
The senate military affairs committee approved the promotion of Lt. Gen. George S. Patton, Jr., to MAJOR GENERAL, hours after Gen. Eisenhower, supreme Allied commander, announced Patton was leading Allied motorized spearheads that trapped the German 7th army in France.
