Meta and Google want to free you from screens — by putting one in front of your eyes at all times.

On #TechWontSaveUs, I spoke with @hypervisible to discuss the anti-social world they’re trying to create through mass adoption of smart glasses.

Such a pleasure to speak with
@hypervisible on Techtonic yesterday. We covered luxury surveillance and Facebook's spy glasses, which reportedly will soon have facial recognition.

We need to encourage better ethics in tech. New from me: "How it's going in tech – without ethics," referencing my conversations w/ @carissaveliz and @sundogplanets

You very definitely should read this piece on the social implications of "AI" and statistics by @FractalEcho over at the Goethe Institute:

"On Being an Outlier"
goethe.de/prj/geg/en/thm/tru/2

When we ask a statistical aggregate to infer probabilities of human action, human worth, and human life, that model will harm the most vulnerable every time. These are the people whom, when considered as data points, represent outliers — unexpected, inconvenient, or otherwise neglected exceptions or eccentricities to the neat rule of parametric normality. You see, to receive the promise of these systems, you must agree to the terms:

These systems are built on data that includes historic and contemporary legacies of systemic racism, ableism, and gendered violence.
These systems are built to solve problems or offer answers to questions that reflect an ongoing cultural ignorance about the nature of those problems or the motivations behind those questions.

This from @hypervisible is really excellent on the multiple problems emerging from image confection: theatlantic.com/technology/arc

It’s not free, and I try not to forward paywalls but for @hypervisible and this writing, an exception.

Bonus mention of @jalcine.

Humans have something called "source amnesia" - our brains forget *where* we learned something but remember the "fact" itself, even if the "fact" was actually an assumption, a guess, or an AI output that we were going to "validate."

As a result, the semantic environment becomes polluted with "common knowledge" that's really nothing more than assumptions repeated often enough.

Remember that any one of these billionaires could solve San Francisco’s homelessness crisis overnight, yet instead they spend their money vilifying the poor and attacking those of us who are trying to house people

Can tech billionaires turn San Francisco into a right-wing dystopia? I've been watching this situation develop over the past couple of years, and then a tech CEO's drunken Twitter death threat rampage tied it all together.
