Human being, being human. Trying, not always successfully, to leave the world a slightly better place than I found it. It's a modest goal, I know.

Anti fascist. If you’re not, what are you?

Profile header is a slice of a pencil sketch drawn by my brother, an architect. The crop focuses on my eyes, and the craggy lines radiating from their corners. My eyebrows appear to have gone feral.

Profile image is me as an almost 40 years younger man. I have dyed black crimped hair in a broad mohawk.

This is actually the lineup at an indie rock festival in 1996.

I remember Nostrils of Colleagues and their Spouses were particularly good.

Reportedly Fingered were OK, but I left about halfway through Markwayne Mullin's set because of the spitting.

🚨 ID checks to get online could become the new norm 🚨

A new amendment would give the UK government sweeping powers to block access to lawful information and communications.

That's unless we submit our identification to a bounty of providers.

Tell your MP to stop this broad and repressive law ⬇️

How to break most mobile apps and make them unusable?
Change the system default font size to large(r).
Suddenly, buttons, text, ... other ui elements are missing. Silently, you don't even know they supposed to exist.
It would be great if developers dedicated testing to some senior citizen.

One thing I stressed to people teaching others how to code is that you should NEVER put your hands on their keyboard and mouse. Have them do everything, because if you do it, they won't learn anything.

Anyway, so on the topic of agentic AI coding tools...

This morning's total #LunarEclipse as seen from Tucson, Arizona, in a three-image sequence.

Three frames of the Moon arranged diagonally against a black sky. The center frame shows the Moon in total eclipse, glowing with a dark coppery-red hue. The frames on either side show the partial phases, where a portion of the Moon is shrouded in dark shadow while a bright, curved crescent remains illuminated by direct sunlight.

European electricity prices are not immune to the gas price shock, since in many hours of the year, gas-fired power plants set the price, as the marginal producers.
The maps show the differences for baseload power to be delivered next quarter, between last Friday (left) and today (right). In the Netherlands, a jump from €70 to €100 per MWh!
Data/maps from EEX Group

That scale of the U.S.' coercive power—persistent, far-flung, and often unilateral—reads in global politics less like great-power diplomacy than like a gangster state’s exercise of muscle and impunity, setting the rules while expecting others to pay the price.

This struck me as a lovely idea. A citywide book club for people who read on the bus. The Dublin Bus book club selects a book by an Irish author every six weeks.

Also a lovely idea: instead of partnering with a company like Amazon, they’ve partnered with a beloved local independent book store, Chapters, for discounted books and events for the book club members.

Looking up the stairs of a Bus Átha Cliath double decker bus in Dublin. Freamed between the yellow handrail and a window and an electronic display board, there's a cheerful orange sign advertising the Books On Board Book Club. It has a picture of a nice big bus on it and information about the book club. Photo taken a few weeks ago.

Sequel.

On a side note, I was once in a meeting where someone kept going on about “a nappy” (British English for diaper).

We were half an hour in before I realised he meant an API.
