I take an MMT-ish view on public spending. If the money supply is growing faster than the real economy (ie available goods and services), then the government ought to run a surplus to reduce the amount of money in the economy. To avoid excessive inflation. But that's the only reason to run a surplus.

Margaret Thatcher’s golden handshake was the oil flowing into her coffers. Denis Healy was quoted as saying that if the oil had started to flow six months earlier, they would not have lost the election.

People thought “Thatcherism” was the source of the UK‘s improving economy. It wasn’t.
It was oil.

@Geri Norway took the proceeds of their oil and gas industries and invested it. The resulting sovereign wealth fund owns something like 3% of all the companies in the world. Some of the income from that now pays for 20% of Norwegian government spending. The UK got a few tax breaks for a few years. Thank you Tories.

So, I'm teaching kids how to use a computer at a local non-profit and what I've found over the past year is that a lot of kids that come to the class have actually never used a keyboard and mouse before. I am going to incorporate a short "how to use a keyboard" section into the class. Most likely on day one. Can anyone recommend a good website or app (that runs on Linux) that I can use? I want it to be fun, more like a game. Thanks for the ideas!

Bitlocker is a Microsoft product that encrypts your laptop hard drive etc. Apparently, Microsoft exfiltrates a recovery key for your Bitlocker encryption and stores it in their cloud, they give it out to law enforcement at request. And of course, they give it out to whoever compromises their system and steals that info. Bitlocker is completely worthless trash. Do not rely on it for information security.
