also psychologically i feel like student loans would be easier to pay off if you know that paying them off means someone else is directly benefiting by getting an education
I work in #HigherEducation in Manchester, UK &spend my time on #belonging, #inclusion, #StudentSupport & #EquitablePedagogy. I have three kids, a horse &a serious book buying problem, all of which will probably come up here. I like hearing what other people are thinking about and love learning from them.
I am a (UK) National Teaching Fellow &have my Principal Fellowship from AdvanceHE. You can find my ORCID here: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1553-4737

Also a useful question when folks come to me and say, "we want to change our engineering org's culture" is: "and how will we know the culture has changed....?"
For me, assuming you can actually observe it in a safe way (not a given, prob needs someone like me to design it lol), less threatened belonging could be part of that answer. It keeps you honest in a way that many other measures don't.

Pilots on Facebook are sharing stories + images of #SpaceJunk breakups and alerts they have seen. Surreal that this is seemingly a regular occurrence in #Aviation now.
Good morning, everyone. It may be another Monday morning, but I hope you all have a great day. You’ve got this.
Today's #Muppets GIF of the Day is...
I missed this last week. Lovely #GoodNews story about the ginnel gardens of Manchester.
( Note for readers: a ginnel is a back alleyway between terraced houses).

I promise, your day will be better if you spend a few minutes with this letter from Nick Cave to a fan who is feeling cynical. “Hopefulness is not a neutral position either. It is adversarial. It is the warrior emotion that can lay waste to cynicism.” https://kottke.org/24/08/hopefulness-is-the-warrior-emotion

I’m a boxing fan.
Knowing what I know about the sport, alarm bells went off when the whole situation with Imane Khelif vs. Angela Carini went viral.
First off, Imane is Algerian. That country isn’t exactly known for being LGBT+ friendly, so the likelihood that an Algerian male would transition to female – in such a public way no less – is slim. In fact, changing genders is illegal in Algeria.
And wouldn’t you know, Imane is a cis gender woman. She was born anatomically female. There is zero evidence that she has a Y chromosome.
In March 2023, the IBA disqualified her for high levels of testosterone. However, there are many reasons a woman might have high level of testosterone, and doesn’t necessarily have to do with having a Y chromosome.
Even though the IBA disqualified her, that disqualification needs to be taken with a grain of salt. The IBA is a notoriously corrupt organization. It is so corrupt, they’ve effectively been barred from the Olympics. It’s their fault that boxing might not be at the 2028 Olympics too.
Either way, Imane competed in IBA competitions previously. She’s been a competitor since 2018. For six years, IBA did not ban her from competition until this year.
“But wait!” some might be saying, “Angela Carini says she fights like a man and having her compete is unfair!”
If that were true, Imane would never lose. However, let’s take a look at her record. She has 37 wins, 5 by KO, and 9 losses.
That means ninewomen have defeated Imane. Nine women walked into the ring against her and managed to beat her decisively. How did these nine women manage to go toe-to-toe against Imane and win?
Maybe Imane simply was unskilled previously but her amazing “man-like” power has managed to carry her through recent competitions.
Okay, but look at her KO percentage. Only knocking out 13.5% of opponents doesn’t scream “crazy macho power” to me. Her power is par for the course for her weight class. And actually, a good many women have a higher KO percentage than Imane – her punching power is therefore the opposite of exceptional.
What bugs me about all this is that Imane Khelif worked hard to get into the Olympics. Now a lie has detracted from her win. She doesn’t deserve this.
Shame on everyone for misgendering Imane Khelif and spreading misinformation.
in an age of performative cruelty, kindness is punk as fuck. be punk as fuck
If you're thinking about this as an "accuracy" problem, you've already lost the plot ... as well illustrated by this quote from one of the dissenting voices hidden in the middle of the article:
ooooh you know when you record something and it was super fun but then you sort of forget? And then it's a lovely surprise? That's what happened to me today when Sam's poetry podcast came out. Just a lovely reminder of how nice it is to talk to someone about poetry and belonging and teaching! https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/highereducation/2024/06/14/poetry-in-academia-a-symposium-of-voices/
For all my higher ed folks, welcome to my Commonly Asked Questions series! In this series, I'm reinterpreting some of higher ed's most tired, trope-ish questions from a trauma-responsive perspective, just to see if we can learn anything from them.
If you have a question you'd like me to take a run at, feel free to post in the comments and I'll give it a run!

@bonstewart I keep cycling back here, but have lost the daily habit. Hope the teeth are feeling all better!
Have you ever wondered what teachers need to know about trauma to help their students? Here's a quick read with my answer to that question, first in my series of Commonly Asked Questions. If you have a question you'd like me to reframe from a #TraumaResponsive perspective, let me know!

The evidence fails to support the claim that homework is academically beneficial for students in any meaningful sense, as I showed in this chapter from my book The Homework Myth: https://www.alfiekohn.org/homework-improve-learning/.
Many HW defenders quickly pivot to claiming that it promotes self-discipline, responsibility, time management & study skills, etc. Yet over the last 20 years I've been unable to find a single study that supports this folk wisdom about HW's supposed nonacademic advantages.
What a pleasure it was to listen to this cohort of expert women #PasstheOEbaton in the community and encourage librarians to take steps forward. I feel grateful and refilled with hope! 👏👏👏

This is great. Disney workers, trying to unionize, created buttons and stickers featuring Mickey Mouse's raised, clenched fist. It's public domain after all! Disney tried to stop them wearing these at work, but there's a law that says companies can't do that, even if they have a dress code, so the unionizers are suing Disney.
