@dnanian does the verb form "to have" denotes you still have that desire? ;) If so, all the more kudos to you :)

Yesterday was the day: FB and Insta accounts scheduled for full deletion. I prepared the move over a month - exchanging new contacts with friends that matter, backups, sending non-overly dramatic explanation posts.
Then preparing a new digital life - one that I fully own.
The press of the button is harder than you may think - I guess it feels like going into detox.. and maybe that's exactly it.
Feels great!

Everyone who is arguing that what's happening in Gaza is a "war" and "Hamas started it" and "but the hostages" and "but October 7th"
is saying, "the genocide should continue"
Everyone who is crying "antisemitism" and "my daughter doesn't feel safe on campus" and "terrorists" and "the Holocaust"
is saying, "the genocide should continue"
Everyone who is saying "I don't know" and "I'm not sure" and "both sides are wrong"
is saying, "the genocide should continue"
So (project 1) I now have Syncthing running on a VPS to host my Obsidian vaults (actually inside a Koofr vault on one of my main Linux machines) and "portable" versions of Obsidian and Synthing on a USB stick also connected to the VPS so I can just plug in and work anywhere without a trace.
It's been a lot of fun, a great learning experience and an even better reminder that being too complacent with big tech has a lot of hidden prices - some of which I want to stop paying.
Thanks 4 reading :)
FB and Instagram are leaving - but Mastodon and Pixelfeld have already entered the scene and I'm loving it.
WhatsApp was going to Element X, but that's a tough one (as you may understand - the day will come!)
Notion has given way to Obsidian (and it's changed my workflow beyond description!)
Dropbox out, Koofr in!
ChatGPT has been crucial for finding the right applications for me and also for creating new things and treading new ground - like self-hosting, yes!

It's great that Meta and Google have kindly directed me to look elsewhere for their replacements.
I had said goodbye to Microsoft and welcome to Linux around Windows 8, but today's turbulent world has made me rethink everything.
The first thing to go was Gmail - hello, Tuta!
Then Chrome - Hello, Vivaldi! Hello, Proton VPN!

"Funeral Dirge" Terence Blanchard (A Tale Of God's Will - A Requiem For Katrina, 2007
The song and album name say a lot already; but beyond mourning, grief and pain, there is hope. It's about starting over, beginnings, heroism. Yes it's a march, but looking ahead, chin up, into the horizon. It is clear on the cover as well. Listen and feel it in your bones, in your heart. The album won a 2008 Grammy for Terence Blanchard.
Three-&1/2 hours bus trip, lights off and I'm in the good company of an old friend...

Now playing (vinyl collection nr 5): Art Pepper "Roadgame".

Art Pepper - alto sax and clarinet
George Cables - piano
David Williams - bass
Carl Burnett - drums
"One for Phil" Oliver Nelson (More Blues and the Abstract Truth, 1965)
One of my early Jazz passions. I remember exactly when I first heard it: having dinner alone my glass of wine in hand and the world stopped at 35 seconds into the music. This is a wonderfull ballad with Phil (Woods) himself playing the alto saxophone; Oliver Nelson's arrangement, I believe, was penned during the recording session!
Gorgeous!
Shi Heng Yi became an instant sensation after his Ted Talk. Then came some wonderful and long interviews with the Mulligan Brothers - displaying his candid yet powerful, soft yet articulated, thoughtful yet emotional speech. Now influencer trash plus AI voice cloning are ruining it all (as with everything). Good thing the book (just) came out.

天気ジャズ! (⌐◪_◪) --ACE
For those of you enjoying a calm Saturday night (on this part of the world) here's a vid from the amazing and incredibly gifted and musical Josh Meader - play one of his arragements/transcriptions: Debussy, this time.
Enjoy!
"When It Rains" Brad Mehldau (Largo, 2002)
The track that woke me up to modern jazz. I heard it in the 2006 "The Lake House" movie - an instant "stop-the-press" moment!
The thrill came much later - no Shazam in those days!
"When It Rains" starts with an easy, gentle melody and slowly evolves into an angular solo over woodwinds-rhytmic-morse-code motifs.
Music is supposed to make you *feel* this tune sure does it to me.
