cdc.gov/covid/php/surveillance pretty grim that this page that i'd relied on for a good few years just stopped updating when the "government shutdown" started.
(yes, i know about other more reliable sites for tracking, i am not asking for recommendations.)

@misty didn't know that "super metroid FAQ where every line is full-justified with no redundant whitespace" person also made music

A way to capture one of the few parts of the human experience they haven’t been able to ingest into their mega-platforms. Here are 12 photographs of opinions, bet on which ones will come true."

@vs_everyone if Mike knows about Robin's devil fruit power and has time to prepare, it's gonna be a tough battle. if not Robin dogwalks them with Snake mostly serving as a distraction.

Burning Down the House (バーニング・ダウン・ザ・ハウス, Bāningu Daun za Hausu) is the Stand of Emporio Alnino, featured in the sixth part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Stone Ocean. It is a pure ability Stand that allows Emporio to interact with the ghosts of a room and the objects contained within.

The companies whose whole job is understanding the Real Cost Of The Finding Out Part do not want to play this game at all.

A Financial Times article headlined "Insurers retreat from AI cover as risk of multibillion-dollar claims mounts."

@punkonbuslives i appreciate how trek has, maybe moreso the longer it's gone on, noted that we shouldn't take for granted that humanity is improving, that backsliding can and does happen, and that backsliding is less a matter of technology and more one of how we work together and look out for one another, or fail to.

@vampiress i have somewhat extensive personal archives going back to 1998... some IRC logs in there, some of which i wouldn't want to release publicly in case the people in them wouldn't want them found by modern search. as for interesting, it's hard to say... the inhabitants of an age frequently don't yet know what will be valuable to future historians.

twitter will not be accessible in this way, it has already been rendered inexcavatable. millions of people deleted their accounts for entirely sensible reasons, severing threads, consigning innumerable interesting and even historically valuable conversations to oblivion.
i don't blame them one bit for doing this. the decision was not truly theirs. it was musk, him alone, who burned the library he'd bought, hoping he could turn it into Biff Tannen's Alternate 1985 Hill Valley.

the ruins of the age of proprietary social media will resemble Fallout's fictional world: sealed vaults, each with an entire civilization that grew, developed, and eventually died. many buried forever beneath the dust, undiscovered. the rare ones that an adventurer finds their way into offer a unique petri dish of a society, a frozen moment in the flashbulb of collapse.

@cms @0xabad1dea it's a little more spread out and there wasn't a singular master strategy. oculus was acquired in 2014. FB's blockchain efforts mostly started in 2017. nfts existed as a concept but didn't blow up until 2021, the year of the rebrand and the big demo. these things converged but the earlier vision was more that "new internet we control", and crypto, nfts etc were more part of the tentative "how". obviously diem was a hugely ambitious bet and thank goodness it failed.

2026: more right wing tech guys will become increasingly openly deranged and violent. more leading centrists will conclude their total surrender to fascism.
(admittedly this is like forecasting that water will remain wet.)

2025-12-07

@0xabad1dea possibly the most pathetic thing is that it wasn't even so much a passion project for him - like clearly he had a deep irrationality about VR being Neat, but it wasn't like Carmack or Sweeney who'd been steadily working towards it their entire careers - as it was a very poorly judged survival bid; he wanted a new second internet totally controlled by his company, even though that made no sense and no one wanted it.

@vampiress For what it's worth, there's nothing that says DOS / code page 437 ASCII has to be nonsquare pixels *or* strictly 25 rows, there are plenty of fonts out there that are designed to look good in any combination of screen + character resolutions and "authenticity" is kind of an illusion since there were so many different types of PC out there back in the day.

@graypixel i played it day one and loved it! but its ending(s) quite deliberately leave one with the sense that there are still deeper mysteries.
but in seriousness despite my joking, i don't actually want to just be told, i'd only want to experience it as part of a journey with the ending fully representing the creators' intentions.

from One Piece chapter 507. Luffy and the Straw Hats are at Shakky's bar with Rayleigh. Luffy is saying he doesn't want to be told where the One Piece is, and if he did he'd quit being a pirate. "I'll never go on an adventure that isn't any fun!"

@tante like are they just talking about LLM chatbots that will blow smoke up your ass on a wide variety of subjects? that's not what "adaptive" means. do they mean some sort of architecture that makes UI and functionality really malleable? any concrete examples of that where "AI" is involved? this all just sounds like "yeah but imagine a GOOD version of the shit thing! it has to exist right??"

2025-12-06

@tante wasn't aware of the concept but had a look at their manifesto. i build things and think about the processes and tools for building them for a living (and as a hobby) and i have no idea what the hell they could mean by this.

"This is where AI provides a missing puzzle piece. Software can now respond fluidly to the context and particularity of each human—at scale. One-size-fits-all is no longer a technological or economic necessity. Where once our digital environments inevitably shaped us against our will, we can now build technology that adaptively shapes itself in service of our individual and collective aspirations. We can build resonant environments that bring out the best in every human who inhabits them."
